Brandwag Burns Bright in Uitenhage
Daniël Pienaar certainly had the better of the of the first half, attacking from the start. Eventually their adventurous play paid off.
Die Brandwag kicked, and Marco Gouws, the Daniël Pienaar eighthman, got the ball near the half-way line on his left. He raced downfield and flyhalf Sachin Toring pushed through the neatest of grubbers. Outside centre Shemondrey Hannes ran onto the ball and scored a delightful try which inside centre Brandon Boshoff converted. 7-0.
This seemed to sting Die Brandwag who now attacked. Daniël Pienaar were penalised and scrumhalf Octavian Muller tapped and raced 40 swerving metres to score.
Juts before time Boshoff kicked a penalty goal and Daniël Pienaar led 10-5 at half-time to the delight of their large crowd of supporters.
The second half started disastrously for Daniël Pienaar. Die Brandwag kicked off deep. Daniël Pienaar got the ball back but the long pass back to Sachin Toring skidded along the ground and through Toring's legs. He recovered and kicked out but only about six metres from his goal-line.
Die Brandwag formed a maul, plodded on till lock Dean Truter broke away and raced over for the try, which fullback Dano Swart converted. Die Brandwag led 12-10, a minute into the second half and built on that lead for the rest of the half while Daniël Pienaar remained scoreless.
Die Brandwag used pick and drive to bring the ball up field to the Daniël Pienaar line. The first time they were penalised but they came back and this time a pass by Muller to his left was straight into the hands of lanky fullback Swart in the flyhalf position. He sold a dummy and went over near the posts. 19-10.
Die Brandwag lost a player to the sin bin after an air tackle but still they attacked as Daniël Pienaar did everything to find ways of attacking, taking chances to do so.
When Die Brandwag fly kicked the ball into touch near the Daniël Pienaar line, Daniël Pienaar threw in quickly, a long, high pass which substitute Ryden Dupont plucked out to the air, and he fell down for the try which Swart converted.
The final whistle went, and a green-blazered mass swarmed onto the field.
