Brandwag ease past Daniel Pienaar

Brandwag scored a decisive 31-8 home victory over local rivals Daniel Pienaar in their Classic Clash in Uitenhage on Saturday.

The two schools meet annually in their Classic Clash game which is attended by thousands of spectators. Both teams entered the game with injuries to key players, Brandwag playing their third flyhalf for the season while Daniel Pienaar were missing captain and Craven Week centre Heino Bezuidenhout.

Daniel Pienaar opened the score card with a drop kick by flyhalf Denvér Klue, within the first two minutes. However, Brandwag lost little time in adding a penalty a minute later by flyhalf Christian Berry.

The first try came when Brandwag right wing Davian Swanepoel received an excellent pass from fullback Henco Pieterse after a break by left wing Levert Pieterse. Berry converted for a 10-3 lead to the home team.

After 25 minutes Daniel Pienaar suffered a telling blow with the loss of flyhalf Klue to injury. Fullback Johan Kemp moved to number 10 and took over the goal kicking.

Brandwag added a penalty by Berry and a try by scrumhalf Brandon O 'Neill, converted by Berry, to their tally for a halftime score of 23-3.

After the break Brandwag's defence held up against a strong attacking effort by the visitors before Brandwag's Berry added another penalty to extend the home team's lead to 26-6.

Daniel Pienaar scored their only try through flank Jean Small. Brandwag had tapped a Daniel Pienaar line-out ball to their own side but were unable to secure the ball before Small picked it up.

Brandwag's Swanepoel scored their second try after an intercept by hooker John-James Moolman and a kick ahead by Henco Pieterse. Berry missed the conversion but Brandwag held the game to a 31-8 victory despite losing captain Stefan Jansen van Vuuren in the last five minutes.

Brandwag at times placed themselves under pressure by not kicking the ball out, but followed the kicks excellently and dominated the line outs with captain Jansen van Vuuren at the lead.

Scrums were fairly even. Daniel Pienaar had ample territory and possession, but Brandwag's defence around the fringes and in the backline was simply superb. Both forward packs had a good game. Brandwag's backline proved to be lethal.
