Captain's profile: Bendré Jonck

At just 18-years-old, the scrumhalf already boasts a remarkable rugby career. In 2014, Jonck received the opportunity to be part of the Eastern Province Under-16 Grant Khomo side and in 2016, received a call-up to be part of the EP U18 Academy side – this time as captain.

"Being part of the EP U18 Academy team was a wonderful opportunity, and to captain the side was an honour. Being named captain of Nico Malan's first XV and the EP U18 Academy side in 2016 is definitely the highlight of my rugby career.

"I think my ability to analyse the game and adapt to the specific situations – to make the correct decisions – is my strength as a scrumhalf and captain," Jonck said.

Nico Malan have had a dream season thus far, the class of 2016 only suffered one league defeat, while they produced some great victories against Hoër Landbouskool Marlow and HTS Daniel Pienaar. However, the skipper realises that facing Framesby, at home, is always a tough challenge and expects a really tough battle from his Port Elizabeth counterparts.

"We have had a very good season thus far which includes some historic victories against big sides. But, the Classic Clash is a different ball game, it can make or break your whole season. The match-up between the schools has always been a very competitive game, we managed to produce two great victories in 2011 and 2015 and Saturday is another chance to make some history.

"The team for Saturday is a well-balanced side. Just like any other sports team, we have struggled with injuries but I do have confidence in my side," he added.

As this is the matriculant's last year at Nico Malan, the skipper hopes to leave behind a remarkable legacy his teammates and school can be proud of. The young man's future plans are to study at the University of the Free Stare and pursue his rugby career.
