Captain's profile: Ferdie Jonker

At only 17-years-old, Jonker has two years’ experience in the first XV jersey and has established himself as a pivotal part of the team.

His strength as a player, has made it easy for the coaches to give him the responsibility of captaincy.

"Being named captain is a privileged and great honour, but I realize the great responsibility that comes with it.

"One man can be a crucial part of a team, but one man alone cannot make a team," Jonker said.

The rivalry between Piketberg and Schoonspruit SS is nothing new. Since 2000, the outcome of the matches has been settled in the final minute of the game and this year is shaping up to be no different.

"The schools have been quite equally matched, with Schoonspruit in the past being known for their fast backline whereas Piketberg had been known for their strong forwards.

"Last year proved to be an exciting match played at Schoonspruit, with Piketberg winning 23-21. This year, we are planning to build on that victory and it will be extra sweet on our home ground," Jonker commented.

This season have not been Piketberg’s best as they have managed just two victories. With a very youthful team taking to the field, Jonker hopes their preparations and hard work will be rewarded.

"We won two of the five games we have played. It has not been a strong season so far, but we are gaining momentum.

"Our backline consists of four experienced players, while the pack and the rest of the team are all young and inexperienced. Despite our team being relatively young, there is plenty of talent and potential.

"It is about believing in yourself and the unity of the team. Hard work beats talent, when talent does not work hard," he added.
