Captain's profile: Heino Gaiser

Graeme College 1st XV captain Heino Gaiser says it is an hounour and privilege to lead his team against St.Andrews College of Grahamstown in an FNB Classic Clash on Saturday.

The lock forward who stands at 186cm and weighs 90kg is known for his off the ball work in the rucks and big strong carries with the ball.

"My friends always tease me about how I am never seen on the field because I am always on ruck duty," Gaiser said,

"Ball carrying has become a strength of mine."

Gaiser's captain's philosophy is: "to set an example for my team follow."

The skipper will need put those words into action as he leads a team mixed with youth and experience onto Somerset field on Saturday.

"We have some experienced 1st XV players mixed in with new youthful and energetic players.

"We’ve chosen a team that we believe will get us a positive result on Saturday."

Gaiser's rugby highlight of his career was in 2013, playing for the Graeme 2nd XV. The team enjoyed a 93 percent success rate and going down only to Grey High from Port Elizabeth.

St.Andrews College have had the upper hand in recent history between these two schools in the Grahamstown derby, however this makes the incentive to win even more palatable for Gaiser.

"Unfortunately Graeme hasn’t had the rub of the green in recent years, but that has just added extra motivation for the team to put in a complete performance on Saturday."

"If every individual makes a perfect effort, the result will be a perfect performance" – is Gaiser's message to his team for Saturday.

Gaiser has hopes of one day playing in the Varsity Cup whist studying Industrial Engineering.
