Captain's profile: JP Heugh
In 2015, Bergrivier SS ended a two-year losing streak with a nail-biting 23-20 Classic Clash win over Weltevrede SS. The loss is still fresh in the mind of the skipper, who was part of the losing side.
However, giving Weltevrede's good season thus far, the fullback is hopeful that his side can retain their dominance and emulate the class of 2013 and 2014.
"Last year was difficult for us, we really struggled throughout the year. This year [2016] has been a better season thus far, we only suffered two losses having played 10 games. A great season always gives a team confidence and thus, I am hopeful that we can regain the Classic Clash title.
"On the other hand, I do not underestimate Bergrivier. I am familiar with their strength as a team and encourage my team to be wary of our opposition. One thing that counts in our favour is that we have the privilege to field a full strength team, who are really dedicated and prepared for Saturday," Heugh said.
The 19-year-old has only been playing rugby since grade eight and has been part of the first XV for the last two years. The young man possesses great speed and posseses a great kicking boot, something that is very rare at schoolboy level.
And on Saturday the matriculant is fully aware that the team will largely rely on his form, not only as a player but as a leader as well. So far, he has become accustomed to the responsibility and prides himself in his additional role as captain.
"To be named captain is a great honour, it is the highlight of my rugby career. As a captain I always strive to give my best for the team and support my teammates," he added.
