Captain's profile: Martin Linde
Every year the town of Potchefstroom is divided in two when it comes to the Volkies-Gimmies longstanding rivalry. For the last five years, Potch Gim have cemented their dominance over their rivals.
Despite going into this match as clear favourites, captain Linde is fully aware of Volkskool's ability to produce an upset – given the loss they suffered at the hands of Volkskool in the Puk Series this year.
"For the past two years we [Potchefstroom Gim] have enjoyed victories in the Classic Clashes. But they [Volkskool Potchefstroom] beat us this year in the Puk Series, therefore I do not underestimate them.
"It is going to be a hard, physical match, that will require 70 minutes of endurance and determination," Linde said.
Potchefstroom Gim's season has been plagued with injuries which has led to the loss of a number of key players.
"Our season so far has been filled with lots of injuries to key players, this makes consistency very difficult. But, the guys have manage to gain full fitness before the big derby and the first XV coach has a full strength squad to choose from for the first time this season. We are a fairly young group but have shown guts in the face of the adversity," he added.
The No.8's list of achievements is already something to be behold. In his short rugby career he has already featured in the Leopards Under-16 team and went on to captain that side. And now, there is the prospect of adding winning an Classic Clash as captain to that list.
"To run out on the field as captain of the school's first XV is really a privilege and honour. And being named captain is a memory I will always treasure. As a player I try to make an impact in each game and I try to keep the players calm and focused.
"Thus, my message to the team is to just believe in our preparation and remember to do your best and God will do the rest," he stated.
The young man's future plans are to study at Sol-Tech in 2017 and continue playing the game that brings him so much joy.
