Captain's profile: Paul Sauer

The rivalry between the sides is ancient, dating far as back as 1963, when Welkom Gimnasium walked away victorious. On Saturday, the class of 2016 has a chance to join the long list of legends gone before them.

Captain Sauer is hopeful that his side have enough proficiency and talent to challenge Welkom Gimnasium.

"The recent history shows that [Welkom Gim] won last year, and that gives them confidence, but we are hoping to change that this year. Our season started of slowly, but it gradually went better and now we are at a good place and peaking at the right time.

"On Saturday, we have the privilege of fielding a pretty experienced squad as most of our players have two to three years senior rugby experience. We also have a few exciting young players with loads of talent," Sauer said.

This year will be Sauer's second year in the first XV jersey, and he is tremendously honoured to lead the side.

"It is a great honour to be chosen as captain of a school with a rich rugby tradition. I would definitely regard it as the highlight of my rugby career. As a captain I try my best to lead from the front and I always encourage the boys to work hard and enjoy the game – the same goes for Saturday, " he added.

The 18-year-old is a formidable sportsman as he has already received a few offers to play cricket in England, as well as a possible contract with the Falcons Rugby Union to continue his rugby career. Whatever this young man decides, rest assured it will not be the last time you hear of Paul Sauer.
