Captain's profile: Sibiya Sibiya

The grade 12 pupil has bagged 15 caps thus far at the Houghton-based school and will be leading his side out for the first Classic Clash of the season against rivals Parktown Boys, a match he feels will be highly physical.

"I expect them to be physical and play the game in our faces but we will be fine if we continue to do what we have been doing all pre-season long," he said.

There has been a fierce rivalry between the schools with recent history favouring St John's, having claimed two victories from three of their previous matches at first XV level. Parktown's only victory came at home in 2013 when they trounced St John's 21-13.

St John's bagged a narrow 24-22 victory at home in 2014 before avenging their 2013 defeat at Parktown with a convincing 32-26 win.

Sibiya was awarded Gauteng provincial colours at Under-12 and U13 and found it tough competing against highly talented players. According to the matriculant, the highlight of his career occurred when he was part of his school's U15 side that beat Michaelhouse.

A firm believer in leading by example, the hooker feels a sense of immense honour to be leading his side onto the field.

"As a player, I am highly competitive but I feel that my strength as a captain lies in my ability to positively influence the players around me. Heading into this match, we will fielding a fairly young side but will be missing the services of just one of our team mates, who is on injured at the moment.

"We got our season off to a positive start this year as we managed to win our first game," he added.

In their first match of the year, the first XV put in a great performance and displayed exceptional skills to defeat St Andrew's School of Bloemfontein, 31-7.

Sibiya has a strong head on his shoulders and plans to pursue a career in architecture at the completion of his schooling career.
