College go down to Glenwood

It may be downhill from Pietermaritzburg to Durban but Maritzburg College could find themselves in an uphill battle when they get to Glenwood.

These two schools give every impression of being the top rugby teams in KwaZulu Natal this year; certainly their results suggest as much.

Glenwood have played 10 full matches, losing just two.

College have played eight matches, losing one and drawing one.

If you look at the FNB Top 20, it would seem that Glenwood have played tougher opposition. They have played three opponents on the Top 20 and three more just close to it. They beat Dr EG Jansen, who are ranked fourth but lost to Waterkloof (6th) and Outeniqua (16th) while they themselves are ranked 8th. They have also beaten Bishops, Jeppe and Michaelhouse.

College have played two teams on the Top 20 – Wynberg (13th) and Kearsney (20th) while they themselves are ranked 15th. Their recent draw with KES was not an encouraging result for College.

Rankings in the Top 20, with the present exception of Grey Bloem, are teams that are close to each other in any way. On any day any team in the Top 20 or just below it could beat any other team in the Top 20 – with the exception of Grey College, that is.

Both schools spread their wings wide and so have not played any common opponents yet this year.

Unlike many KwaZulu Natal schools both play two terms of rugby and so play each other twice a year. Last year both matches were high-scoring thrillers.

Glenwood will be without two of their stars Jaco Coetzee and Morné Joubert, who are both in the South African Sevens team to take part in the African Youth Games in Gaberone, Botswana.

Glenwood will be on Dixons, which may well be a winning advantage.

Experience

Even without Morné Joubert and Jaco Coetzee, Glenwood have five players back from 2013's great encounters – Sphamandla Ngcobo, who was a left wing then and in is  a centre now, the halfbacks Curtis Jonas and Kwazi Khanyile, Koos Tredoux and  Percy Mngadi who was a prop last year and is a hooker now.

For College Brandon  Holder, has moved from wing to fullback but Marcel Coetzee,  Darren Goodsen, Hayden Tharratt, Wiaan Jacobs and Tiaan Steyn are back and in their same positions.

Koos Tredoux and Sphamandla Ngcobo of Glenwood and Marcel Coetzee of College were in the KwaZulu Natal side at the 2013 Craven Week.
