DHS Shock Glenwood

The match was played on Dixons at Glenwood, where DHS had last won at the beginning of the century. Their 20-17 victory follows a succession of 11 defeats at the hands of the Grasshoppers, the name DHS gave Glenwood who in turn called DHS the Horseflies.

There was a wind which freshened, and Glenwood had first use of it.

It took DHS just a minute to get into the lead when Sanele Nohamba goaled the second penalty against Glenwood.

But Glenwood in the bottle green jerseys and light green shorts came roaring back on the attack where they found the determined DHS defence deadly. DHS were penalised, and Glenwood tapped and bashed at their line. From a scrum they went right – 6-10-6 on the run around – Dylan Kruger to Dylan Pretorius to Dylan Kruger to Morné van Rensburg  who scored the right corner. Van Rensburg converted from touch and Glenwood led 7-3 after 11 minutes.

DHS looked certain to score when tall Asande Mnguni went on a long weaving run, ball in one hand. He gave to Tonderai Ndudzo but a brilliant tackle by Pretorius saved the day.

Glenwood, doing what they were expected to do, increased the lead. They again turned down a penalty kick at goal and kicked for a line-out instead. They mauled, De Wet broke away and was close. Jaden Hendrickse gave JJ van der Mescht a perfect pass and the massive lock thrust over for the try. 12-3 after 29 minutes,

Ndudzo had a strong run down the left and Luthando Buthelezi was just beaten by the dead-ball line as he dived for a rolling ball in in-goal.

At half-time Glenwood led 12-3.

As DHS had scored early in the first half, so they scored early in the second half.

Cham Zondeki, stepping left and right first attacked the Glenwood line and then powerful Phendulani Buthelezi, captain of the team and head boy of DHS, burst over to score a try converted by Nohamba. 12-10 to Glenwood after 37 minutes.

Glenwood lost a player to the sin bin for a deliberate knock-on and when he came back DHS were leading 17-12 after Asanda Kunene had had speedy run down the left. Glenwood  were penalised and DHS opted for a scrum on the left. They went right where Phendulani Buthelezi forced his way over and down for a try under the posts. 17-12 11 minutes into the half.

DHS came back on the attack and from a tackle/ruck Lwazi Moletshe played scrumhalf and passed straight back to Nohamba who dropped a soaring goal. 20-13 with 14 minutes to play.

This was an al-action game but in those last minutes the tempo rose even more with play going this way and that till Glenwood's speedy fullback broke and raced down the right. He passed inside to Hendrikse who flicked the ball back to Cele who scored. 20-17, conversion to come but the conversion was unsuccessful.

There was still a bit of time and Glenwood threw everything at DHS who contained them well till they won a turnover and  Nohamba kicked out to end the enthralling match.

It really was a thrilling encounter between two intense, skilful teams, led by two outstanding captains – Phendulani Buthelezi of DHS and Dylan Kruger of Glenwood.
