Dominant Wynberg remain on track for southern slam
WRAP: Wynberg maintained their perfect record against their local rivals when they beat SACS on Saturday, while Michaelhouse claimed a narrow victory at Maritzburg College.
The power of schoolboy rugby in the Western Cape currently lies in the Winelands region and – given Stellenberg’s recent form – in the northern suburbs.
Stellenberg racked up a 48-24 win at Boland Landbou on Friday. The Jade Brigade has won 14 out of 16 matches this season, and will be favourites to extend that record when they face Outeniqua, Durbanville and Milnerton after the mid-year break
As far as Cape Town’s southern suburbs are concerned, Wynberg have been the leading team in the area for the past few seasons.
Wynberg beat SACS 26-15 this past Saturday to bolster their winning record in the annual four- school series – which also includes Bishops and Rondebosch.
Wynberg downed Rondebosch and Bishops earlier this season and haven’t lost to any of their southern suburbs’ rivals since 2024.
They will play Bishops at home on August 1, before travelling to Rondebosch and SACS in later weeks.
After falling one result short of a clean sweep in 2025, Wynberg may finish with a six-from-six record in 2026.

Rondebosch have blown hot and cold this season and were pushed to the brink in the recent derby against a rebuilding Bishops on Saturday.
Bishops led 24-12 at the break, before Bosch scored 17 unanswered points in the second stanza.
The visitors scored a try at the death to take a 29-24 lead – and in response, the Rondebosch schoolboys flooded onto the Piley Rees field before the conversion was taken.
A number of other important local derbies were staged around the country this past Saturday.
Michaelhouse halted Maritzburg College’s five-game winning streak when they won 24-17, while Hilton claimed a 31-27 victory over Kearsney. The two Midlands powerhouses will meet at Michaelhouse this coming Saturday.
Noordheuwel scored a valuable 24-12 win at Waterkloof to edge ahead of Klofies in the Noordvaal Cup standings – although Garsfontein and Monument still occupy the top two positions.
In the Eastern Cape, Selborne and Hudson Park continued their winning runs when they beat Cambridge and Stirling respectively, while Kingswood downed St Andrews in Makhanda.
