Gimmies compound Grey's pain in Paarl
WRAP: Paarl Gimnasium handed Grey College their third loss of the season, while there were a couple of major upsets in the Eastern Cape at the weekend.
Gimmies have come a long way in the space of a month.
After losing 19-20 to Stellenberg in their first match of the season, Pieter Rossouw’s charges have won six matches in a row – with Affies and Grey College among their more notable victims.
Gimmies beat Grey 29-14 this past Saturday in wet and muddy conditions.
The result and performance suggest they are back on track, and they will fancy their chances ahead of the Wilderklawer Tournament in Kimberley this coming weekend, where they will face
Helpmekaar and Durban High School.
Grey, however, will have some soul-searching to do after recording their third-successive defeat.
The Bloemfontein juggernaut hasn’t lost three or more matches in a calendar year since 2015.
The margin of defeat should be a concern for coach Jannie Geldenhuys and company. While they lost to Stellenberg and Nudgee College by five and three points respectively, they were routed by 15 in Paarl this past Saturday.
While the margin has raised a few eyebrows, the result was somewhat expected, given the contrasting form of the teams over the past month or so.
Up in Pretoria, Garsfontein followed up their recent successes against Noordheuwel, Stellenberg and Paarl Boys with the big derby scalp of Affies. The 38-34 result marked Affies’ fourth loss of the season.

Jeppe scored a notable win for the Noordvaal region when they edged Wesville – the leading side in KwaZulu-Natal last year – 29-28 in Johannesburg, while Oos-Moot beat Nelspruit 31-14.
The big derby in Durban yielded a surprising result, with hosts Northwood emerging with a 17-14 win against DHS, one of the KZN powerhouses.
Paul Roos bounced back from their recent loss to Stellenberg to down Grey High 28-15 in Gqeberha, while there was more drama across other big fixtures staged in the Eastern Cape.
After the dispute between coach Jake White and Selborne College headmaster Andrew Dewar was leaked to the media, few gave the team a chance of beating Graeme on Saturday.
Selborne went into the match on the back of three losses, one draw, and one win.
Graeme – who have been one of the strongest teams in the Eastern Cape over the past few years – started the fixture with a 5-0 record.
On the day, however, Selborne beat Graeme 36-24 at home.
That said, it wasn’t the biggest upset in the Eastern Cape on Saturday.
Dale College have taken giant strides this season, and started the weekend with a record of four wins in six games.
On Saturday, Dale edged Queens 31-29 (at Queens) to record their first win against their arch-rivals since 2019.
In the Western Cape, Boishaai claimed a significant 20-9 victory against Wynberg – given that Wynberg managed to win at Brug Street two years ago, and are currently the form side in Cape Town’s southern suburbs.
Boland Landbou hit back after five consecutive losses to down Rondebosch, while SACS held off Bishops in a key southern suburbs clash.
