MATCH REPORT: Paarl Gimnasium underlined their status as the No.1 ranked schoolboy team in South Africa with a 25-11 win over rivals Paarl Boys’ High at Faure Street Stadium on Saturday.

Centre Derik Cloete scored a brace in the derby, with Thomas Saunders and Mickyle Booise also getting on the scoresheet for Gimmies.

Boishaai could only score one try against a powerful Gimmies’ defence.

Pieter Rossouw’s side waited a year to get their revenge in this tie after they went down 33-35 in last year’s dramatic Paarl Derby.

It was a really positive start for Boishaai, and they had a couple of opportunities to open the scoring in the first five minutes.

Flyer Dirk Farmer was terrorising Gimmies’ defence with his speed in the wide channels.

Flyhalf Daniël Meisenheimer eventually opened the scoring with a penalty goal in the 17th minute before he doubled Boishaai’s lead a few minutes later.

After getting a bit of momentum, Gimmies finally got their first points in the 26th minute with three points from Louis Koen. He had the opportunity to level the scores moments later, but he pushed his penalty attempt wide.

However, Gimmies found themselves in front in the 20th minute after Boishaai failed to deal with a chip kick from Koen, and it was Thomas Saunders who gave the ball to Cloete to score the first try.

At half-time, it was 10-6 to Gimmies.

Gimmies extended their lead five minutes into the second half when Cloete ran in for his second try after sustained pressure inside Boishaai’s half.

It got even better for Gimmies a few minutes later when Saunders produced some individual brilliance to race away from several defenders to score a try.

Gimmies were reduced to 14 players in the 56th minute after Dirk Hugo was shown a yellow card for his team’s repeated infringements, and not long after that Boishaai were back in it when Aleit Stander went over for a five-pointer.

After absorbing a huge amount of pressure, Gimmies eventually took the game away from Boishaai with a try by scrumhalf Mickyle Booise in the corner.
