Glenwood beat College - again.
Glenwood were clearly the better side though the match lost some of its impetus with 15 minutes to go when all the replacementsd got a game.
Goldstones has a mystique of its own, and for the boys from warm, humid Durban it is feared above all for its dry hardness. But ample recent rains have ensured that the ground was softer and even slippery. It seemed to affect the handling as it was often inaccurate on both sides. The result was an unusually large number of scrums. This robbed the match of its fluency.
From the very start Glenwood ran the ball. College started running as well but then resorted to much kicking to gain ground. In the second half, when they started running, they looked much better.
Jaden Hendrikse kicked off to start the match. He and his flyhalf, Rynhardt Jonker, son of referee Marius, both players at Craven Week in 2017, were outstanding for their side. Hendrikse's passing and kicking were excellent and Jonker was the one to set the backs running with great profit.
Glenwood attacked first but the College defence was determined and forthright.
When Glenwood had a five-metre line-out, lock Wandile Hlope won a turnover, and College survived.
When Werner Coetzee burst down the midfield, the attack went wide right. Runako Brynard had an overlap and was diving to score when Ethan Heuer and Anele Nzimande tackled him, forcing him to lose the ball.
Glenwood stayed on the attack. From a five-metre scrum, eighthman George Luzolo charged at the line. He was close and when Glenwood went right inside centre JC Conradie forced his way through two tacklers and over for a try under the posts. 7-0 after 14 minutes.
From the kick-off and some wayward Glenwood handling College attacked. From a scrum Nthuthuko Mchunu offloaded to his right and Jacques van der Walt beat two defenders an d got clear to score the try. Bashers in the air, chaps. 7-5 after 16 minutes.
From a scrum penalty Hendrikse made the 10-5 after 21 minutes. But Glenwood suffered a severe setback.
Captain Brynard had another run down the right, but in being tackled, he damaged his wrist and was forced to leave the field, his place taken by Freddie Slabbert. Hendrikse kicked his second penalty goal. 13-5 after 24 minutes.
Glenwood went through advancing stages as Jonker pulled the strings until with a sudden burst of speed hefty Conan Le Fleur an untouched to score. Hendrikse converted. 20-5 after 33 minutes.
From the kickoff Slabbert ran strongly but wing Siyanda Cele slipped when a try seemed possible.
From the kick-off to start the second half, Jonker got his side running. The ball went ;left to Le Fleur, who ran over 50 metres to score. 25-5 after 37 minutes.
College now started running with the ball and doing it well but fullback Heuer was injured and taken off on a stretcher. The replacement Slabbert was also injured and replaced.
Big, strong, fast flank Lindo Luthuli broke strongly to set up the next try and he sent wing Cele racing away, too fast to be caught. 30-5 after 48 minutes.
College came more and more into the game, much of it at the initiative of scrumhalf Simamane. He tapped a penalty kick and raced down the field till bundled out at the left corner.
Glenwood lost the line-out.
Bur they had a five-metre scrum.
Glenwood lost the scrum.
Simamane darted over for the try which Keagan Collyer converted. 30-12 after 60 minutes, a second opportunity for the College boys to throw their bashers in the air.
Glenwood went back on the attack, but College got the ball on their line. With nothing to lose, they started running from behind their line, going ;left, right and left again where Dylan Pretorius snapped up the ball and scored at the posts. Jonker converted, and the final whistle sounded.
