Glenwood gets two Mayday calls

Two men of Glenwood have been called on to respond to distress signals from national teams.

Warren Whiteley, an Old Boy of Glenwood has been called to join the Springboks now that Willem Alberts is out injured. He flew with the Springboks to Argentina on Sunday night for the Test in Salta on Saturday. Till now Whitely, the charismatic, energetic captain of the Lions and the Golden Lions, described by coach Heyneke Meyer as a 'classic No.8,  has not been a Springbok.

Prop Kenny van Niekerk, a schoolboy, has been flown down to George to join the South African Schools side. Van Niekerk was one of 13 Glenwood players in the KwaZulu-Natal side at Craven Week and was one of 56 players invited to SA Schools trials in Kempton Park after the Craven Week. A loosehead, he did not make the final 28. On Monday he set out for George where South Africa will play Wales on Tuesday.

Van Niekerk replaces Michael Kumbirai who has a broken ankle.
