Glenwood win tight encounter
Glenwood beat Michaelhouse 14-13 at Glenwood on a windy Saturday. Michaelhouse won just one of the 19 matches between the two schools.
The team prepared slightly better this week and needed to spend time together and get some game time behind them.
Because of cricket fixtures and the season being so close it has been hard to get match practice. It is a young team in the experience part especially at vital positions, none the less the boys won a hard fought battle.
Michaelhouse played with the wind in the first half and enjoyed that advantage. After a knock on from the kick-off Michaelhouse used smooth handling to dive over for a early try and take the lead 7-0.
Glenwood fought back to earn a penalty which Warren Potgieter slotted to make the score 7-3. Glenwood gained some momentum and advanced right onto the Michaelhouse try line and some great patience paid off with captain Siyabonga Tom diving over in the corner. Potgieter failed to convert taking the score to 11-10 at the half time break.
The second half was a bruising encounter as both teams traded blows. It was a physical affair that that eventually lead to a Glenwood penalty on the Glenwood ten-metre line. Warren Potgieter hit the left upright from 60m and failed to convert. It was a beautiful kick. Michaelhouse soon after converted a penalty to take the lead 11-13.
The Glenwood boys kept attacking the try-line and solid defence held them out. The hard work and consistent pressure eventually paid off and Glenwood was awarded a penalty that Warren Potgieter converted to take the lead by one point 14-13.
The end whistle sounded and Glenwood notched up their first win of the season. Well done to Michaelhouse that played a great game.
The Glenwood team now leave for the Potch/Pukke festival where they will play three tough games before playing at the Kearsney Festival. It will be a great opportunity for the whole team to play in these festivals and to enjoy some much-needed time as a complete team.
