Good Rugby at Graeme

The annual Graeme College Rugby Day produced yet another set of bumper Eastern Cape schoolboy rugby fixtures in Grahamstown on Saturday.

Cambridge kicked off the day's proceedings with an 8-0 win over Union High and Hudson Park then cruised past Muir College by claiming a 26-0 win.

Queen's College and Selborne both produced stunning second half performances to win their matches. Queen's were up 17-7 against Pearson at the end of the first half, while Selborne held a 10-0 lead over Brandwag at the break. They then went on to claim massive wins, respectively running out victors 41-7 and 45-12.

Local Grahamstown sides Kingswood, St Andrew's and hosts Graeme College were all hoping to make their fans happy on the day. However, Kingswood suffered a narrow 31-28 loss to Marlow, while St Andrew's managed to bounce back after losing to Bishops on Thursday by defeating Nico Malan 33-20. The hosts received a 27-0 hiding from Dale College.

Schoolboy powerhouses Bishops and Grey High played in the day's final game. The game was highly entertaining as both teams were willing to play a running brand of rugby.

2014 Craven Week player of the year Curwin Bosch was deadly with his out of hand kicks and counter attacking from fullback and flyhalf, while Bishops' inside centre Cornel Smit often found gaps in the Grey midfield.

Despite a late Bishops fightback, Bosch was involved in the movements which led to tries by wing Mohamed Connelly, outside centre Keanu Vers and flank Matthew Lawson to give Grey a deserved 24-15 win.

All in all the day was a great success, setting the scene for another bumper year of schoolboy rugby in the Eastern Cape.
