Grant Khomo Week in Oudtshoorn

The Grant Khomo Week for Under-16 provincial teams starts at Bridgton Sport Grounds in Oudtshoorn on Monday, 6 July 2015.

The week is named after an outstanding sportsman and administrator, Grant Austin Khomo born in Potgietersrus in 1921. At Fort Hare he learnt to play rugby in the early 1940s.

He was an outstanding athlete and sportsman who eventually played rugby and soccer for the national teams then available to him, captaining both teams. He was also the national tennis champion. He took to rugby so quickly that in his second year he played for Border at the 1941 Tournament. In 1950 when the SA Bantu Rugby Board played its first Test against the SA Coloured Rugby Board, Khomo was the captain. He was the [president of the Board when the team played its first Test against an overseas team – against England in Port Elizabeth in 1972.

The Under-16 week is of great interest to provinces and to those who come scouting for talented players, a high profile business in the era of professionalism in rugby.

This year again there will be 20 teams taking part, including Zimbabwe and Namibia. The matches will be played on three days – Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

The fixtures are drawn up for the first day and subsequent fixtures depend on what went before in an effort to match teams happily.
