Grey College put Welkom Gym to the sword
SCHOOLS WRAP: Grey College thrashed Welkom Gym 109-3 in Bloemfontein on Saturday, while Outeniqua, Helpmekaar and Diamantveld also claimed significant wins.
Several teams racked up some big numbers over the weekend, and the performance by Grey College could well be viewed as a statement.
After coming through the season-opener against Trio with a 38-12 win, Jannie Geldenhuys’ charges have cracked on to claim a 109-3 victory over Welkom Gym.
After beating Gimmies 60-17 last season, Grey effectively doubled their score this past Saturday, while keeping Welkom tryless.
Grey will face greater tests this season, but it’s fair to say that they have built up some momentum over the past two weeks and will go into the clash against Oakdale this coming Saturday with confidence.
Elsewhere, several other teams romped to substantial victories to begin their respective campaigns with a bang.
Outeniqua fell agonisingly short of a century of points in their 99-0 hammering of Worcester Gym. Much like Grey, they scored twice as many points as they did in the 2025 meeting with Worcester, which ended 45-13.
Queen’s College shook off the rust to thump hosts Ooskus Gym 36-0 at the festival in East London this past weekend, while Helpmekaar banked a 77-5 win at Witteberg.
While the margin of victory was not as emphatic as those listed above, Diamantveld will be thrilled with the result against Monument in Kimberley.
Monnas led in the closing stages and appeared to be on course for victory, before Diamantveld slotted a penalty goal to edge the contest 36-35.
