Grey College target Stellenbosch redemption
PREVIEW: Paul Roos host Grey College in one of the biggest clashes of the school season this Saturday, while the Noordvaal Cup reaches the semifinal stage next Tuesday.
Paarl Gim finished their 2026 campaign at the top of the unofficial rankings after they beat Paarl Boys in the annual derby on August 1.
Nevertheless, there’s still plenty to play for in the last two weeks of the season.
Paul Roos will meet Grey College in Stellenbosch this Saturday, while Garsfontein will look to clinch their fourth-consecutive Noordvaal Cup title over the next fortnight.
Unfortunately, some of the biggest school clashes in the country will be played on the same day as the SA U18 and SA U18 ‘A’ fixtures at Stellenberg this Saturday.
As a result, Paul Roos, Grey College and others will be without some of their leading players, who will be on national duty.
The Noordvaal Cup semifinalists, however, should have access to their top players, as the First XV fixtures at Garsfontein and Monument will be staged next Tuesday.
Rugby365 looks ahead to some of the big match-ups scheduled for the coming days.
PAUL ROOS V GREY COLLEGE
Paul Roos have been among the leading teams in the country this season, as their record of 14 wins and two losses suggests.
Gimmies have achieved a superior record (15-1), and Stellenberg have won 16 and lost two – while also beating Paul Roos in the head-to-head staged in Bellville.
While the top-two spots are no longer up for grabs, Paul Roos could add another big scalp to their collection if they beat Grey College in Stellenbosch on Saturday.
While Corné Uys’ charges have fallen short against Gimmies and Stellenberg, they have beaten other top dogs like Affies (45-28), Garsfontein (21-18), Oakdale (15-13) and Boishaai (28-22).
By contrast, Grey have endured one of their worst seasons in recent times, losing four games.
That rotten run has included marquee defeats against Stellenberg, Gimmies and Affies.
Grey have managed to win all six of their home matches, and rounded off their campaign in Bloem with a 45-17 win over Outeniqua last week.
They will travel to Paul Roos as underdogs, though, and may record a fifth loss for the season.
The Maroon Machine lost this fixture 25-26 in Bloem last year.
Back in 2024, however, they put Grey to the sword in Stellenbosch and secured a famous 36-3 win.
While both teams will be without key players due to national call-ups, Paul Roos should get the job done in their final appearance of the season at the Markotter Stadium.
NOORDVAAL CUP SEMIFINALS
Garsontein’s chances of advancing to yet another Noordvaal Cup decider will be strengthened by the fact that they will face Waterkloof at home next Tuesday.
Overall, Garsies have won 13 from 15 matches in 2026, losing to Jeppe and Paul Roos.
Since the latter defeat in April, Garsies have cracked on to win nine consecutive matches, and are yet to lose a game in this season’s Noordvaal Cup.
Waterkloof may take heart from the fact that they pushed Garsfontein close in the previous meeting back in May, which ended 24-18 in the visitors’ favour.
Garsies have been dominant at home, though, winning their Noordvaal Cup games by margins of 25 points or more. Last week, they hammered EG Jansen 76-5.
After a ropey start to the season, Monument have won 13 of their last 14 games.
Their only loss in that run was a 32-61 defeat to Garsfontein – and that scoreline will be spoken about should both teams progress to the decider.
This Saturday, Monnas will fancy their chances against Noordheuwel, who have blown hot and cold in 2026.
Nories come into this clash with an overall record of eight wins in 18 games.
When the two Krugersdorp teams last met in May, Monument hammered Noordheuwel 41-15.
OTHER TEAMS TO WATCH
Local rivals Dale and Queens will collide in Qonce this Saturday.
Queens dominated the two-game series in 2025, winning by nine points at home and by 14 away.
This season, Dale have been one of the leading teams in the Eastern Cape, and edged the first derby stage at Queens 31-29.
In Gqeberha, Grey High will look to finish their season on a high when they host Selborne.
Down in Cape Town, Wynberg will be gunning for a fifth-consecutive win in the southern suburbs series when they travel to Rondebosch.
A much-improved SACS side will also fancy its chances at Bishops.
