Grey Go Full Steam Ahead

In Bloemfontein on Saturday Grey College had a comfortable 50-28 win over Affies from Pretoria in an FNB Classic Clash.

The home side scored eight tries to the visitors four.

Strangely, Affies won the second half 21-12, but Grey’s half-time lead was far too big to chase down. At the break, they led 38-7 after scoring six tries. They took the lead after just two minutes and never looked like losing it.

Two of those tries were scored in similar fashion from line-out mauls by hooker André-Hugo Venter, son of the great Springbok flank André Venter. In both cases the maul was driven some 20 metres before Venter plunged over.

Grey were leading 19-0 when, against the run of play, Affies scored a splendid try. From a tackle about 12 metres inside his own half, replacement flank, Brendhan Kelbrick, picked up and raced straight down the field that ended when flank Adolph Visser was stopped just short of the Grey line. Affies kept possession and lock Christiaan Kamfer scored from close quarters.

Grey then kicked off. The ball was allowed to bounce till lock Tiaan Jonker got the ball a metre or so from the Affies line and scored the softest of tries.

In the second half, Kamfer again scored from close quarters in a half of five tries, all scored from close quarters.
