Grey High Win Big

Both sides played a lot of rugby, enthusiastically and with determination, but Grey were the ones to take their chances  better. they needed no invitation to scored.

One of those in a match would have been a thriller.

It was a sunny day in Port Elizabeth, but being Port Elizabeth there was a wind blowing. Selborne played with the wind in the first half and ended it trailing 19-0.

David Coetzer, Selborne's creative flyhalf, had the first telling break of the match but his pass went awry. Selborne were doing most of the attacking but outside centre Kholiwe Konza intercepted and ran straight through 62 empty metres to score at the posts. 7-0 after 17 minutes.

Grey won a turnover, Konza ran and Aya Matroos executed two goosesteps to beat defenders on the way to scoring a try. 14-0 after 27 minutes.

From the kick-off, Miles Norton had a strong run, Bevan Prinsloo bashed out of defence and then Selborne kicked into Grey who ran over the half-way line. The ball went out to wing Josh Oosthuizen who passed to hooker, Corné Slabbert who rounded an opponent in a 24-metre run to the line. 19-0, the half-time score.

Grey, with the wind, scored first in the second half. It was not a wind-assisted try but a second intercept by Konza who again ran straight to the posts. 26-0 after 39 minutes.

Then it was Selborne's magnificent turn, as they counter attacked and slight, deceptive David Coetzer ran 58 metres to score the try. 26-7 after 44 minutes.

But three minutes later Grey won a turnover in the Selborne 22 and Solaan scored. 33-7 after 47 minutes.

Solaan was 12 metres inside his own half when he set his second try in motion. He ran and gave to fullback Sihle Njezula who ran and gave inside to Solaan, who scored and it was 38-7 after 49 minutes.

It seemed that Grey were running away with the match but then Selborne went through phases and put Norton in for a try on the right wing. 38-12 after 53 minutes, as score heaped on score in the action of this willing match. 

From the kick-off Grey attacked with speedy, swerving Josh Oosthuizen in possession. The left wing gave to Solaan who completed his hat-trick. 45-12 after 55 minutes. 

Selborne grubbered to just outside the Grey 22 where Oosthuizen got the ball and set off at great place on a swerving run to score. 50-12 after 65 minutes.

Three minutes later eighthman André Rust played to Thomas Bursey and the scrumhalf was in for his side's third try. 50-176 after 59 minutes.

Grey won a turnover near the halfway line and there was big, elegant Dumisa Ngcivana, a substitute, striding down the midfield for a try under the posts. 57-17 with two minutes to play, just time enough for Selborne to go 8-13-10 and then a second try for Norton.

And so this delightful match of astonishing tries ended at 57-22 to the home side.
