Grey weather Bloem storm to start season on winning note

By Jon Cardinelli
Monday 2 Mar 2026

SCHOOLS WRAP: Grey College and Welkom Gym claimed victories in rain-affected matches staged at the President Steyn Sports Day in Bloemfontein on Saturday.

The South African schoolboy season kicked off this past weekend, with a host of teams from the Free State and Northern Free State catchment areas competing at the President Steyn Sports Day in Bloemfontein.

Grey College thumped Trio 40-3 when the teams met at the same tournament in 2024, but were made to work for the result in the fixture staged in 2025, which they won 38-10.

This past Saturday, Grey beat Trio 38-12.

The wet weather influenced the contest, though, as well as other fixtures staged at the venue.

Welkom Gym and Fichardtpark were forced to restart their clash, after it was stopped due to the inclement conditions.

Thanks to their superior set piece, Gimmies ground out a 12-10 victory and got their season off to a positive start.

Grey College and Welkom Gym will meet in Bloem this coming weekend, while schools in other regions will get their respective campaigns underway.

Grey High will host Boland Landbou in Gqeberha, while other First XVs from the Eastern Cape participate in the Ooskus Gym festival in East London.

SELECTED RESULTS – FEBRUARY 28

Grey College 38-12 Trio

Welkom Gym 12-10 Fichardtpark

Jim Fouche 33-7 Hentie Cilliers

Bethlehem Voortrekker 27-0 HTS Louis Botha

Witteberg 17-12 Wesvalia

Middelburg HTS 29-26 Ligbron

Lichtenburg 43-52 Sentraal
