House vs College in History

On Saturday 20 Maritzburg College rugby teams will trek up over World View and on up to Balgowan to play Michaelhouse, a week after matches with Hilton.

Saturday's encounter will be the 171st between these two great rivals. The first encounter in 1897 would have been one of the very first outings on a rugby field for Todd's new school and predates the Hilton/ Michaelhouse rivalry by seven years!

The first encounter was a 0-3 loss, as were the following two matches. Michaelhouse forced a 3-3 draw in 1898, lost the second encounter of that year and then what must be famously won the next two matches of 1898. 4-3 and 14-13.

1907 to 1920 must have been what are called character building years with Michaelhouse managing only 12 points in 19 games (17 of which went by without Michaelhouse bothering the scorers!). This period also constitutes Michaelhouse's longest losing streak against any opponent.

1933-1937 was our first major purple streak against College, where we won six on the trot-we have only gone unbeaten for three encounters twice since. 1941-1942 and again 2008-2010.

We have drawn 15 times, more often than against any other opponent.

Our greatest victory came in 1902 where A-B-C-O-L-L-E-G-E were put to the sword 36-0 and in 1972 we suffered our heaviest defeat. 9-50

Michaelhouse have gone scoreless on 41 occasions, and College on just 14 (twice each in 1900 and 1941).

Michaelhouse have won 46 times, lost 109 and drawn 15 scoring 1424 points and conceding 2154 (8-13) in the process.
