K-Day: St Andrew's vs Kingswood

The city of schools, churches and lawyers comes boisterously alive when Kingswood march across to St Andrew's for K-Day, a day when young people run around the sports field to the noise of whistles and urgent shouts, and older people smile in friendly approval.

They have been doing it since 1898 when St Andrew's won, when Kingswood was just four years old. The bigger Anglican College, 39 years older, has mostly dominated the smaller Methodist school. In fact when Kingswood won in 2011, the sweet victory came after 17 successive defeats but in the last six years each school has won three times.

This year so far, St Andrew's has been performing better. They have lost just two of their 13 matches and are ranked 18th on the Schools Top 20. Early on they lost to Bishops and SACS but have been strong of late and include the scalps of Selborne and Grey High. In fact College, as they call themselves, were the first team to beat Grey this year.

Kingswood have lost half of their 14 matches and have yet to claim a noteworthy scalp this season.

St Andrew's are the hosts this year and the 1st XV match will be played on Lower, a field bought for College by Sir Jacob Barry in 1896, levelled at cost of £900 and first used for rugby in 1900. In a sense it is a field that has grown up with the rivalry between Kingswood and St Andrew's, a place much loved by Andreans, located between the chapel and the Old  Andrean Club.
