KES go across to Jeppe
There have been fewer spectators at Super Rugby matches this year than there will be watching Jeppe High School for Boys play King Edward VII School at Jeppe on Saturday.
It is one of those Premier Interschools matches and so will be shown live on television. But still there will ge a good, animated crowd. It's a big day.
These are two of Johannesburg's oldest schools and originally in the days of hard, grassless grounds, they played soccer but with the arrival of kikuyu grass and good sense they switched to rugby and so these two schools, near Johannesburg and near each other started going at it.
In 1935 KES won and generally since then KES have enjoyed success but just recently Jeppe have come back strongly. This year Jeppe have had a somewhat better season.
The Season so Far
Jeppe have played 13 matches, winning nine and losing to four. They lost to three powerful sides in Glenwood, Paarl Boys' High and Affies but also to Northwood of Durban who have had a better season but an erratic one.
KES have played 15 matches, winning nine, drawing one and losing five.
Common Opponents
Their common opponents this year have been Affies, Pretoria Boys High, St Alban's, St Stithians, St John's and Northwood.
Affies: Jeppe lost 23-11; KES lost 38-10
Pretoria Boys High: Jeppe won 10-9; KES won 26-19
St Alban's: Jeppe won 42-10; KES won 43-8
St Stithians: Jeppe won 50-14; KES won 45-13
St John's: Jeppe won 24-18; KES won 30-28
Northwood: Jeppe lost 31-17; KES won 50-15
Apart from the Northwood result, the others are much of a muchness.
Representative Teams
The players of both schools are eligible for the Golden Lions.
Academy Week
At the Academy Week, the Golden Lions had two teams. The Golden Lions played stronger sides and won all three of their matches. The Golden Lions XV played weaker sides and won two of three of them.

KES: Manny Mbatha, Senzo Mkize, Mlungisi Matsheke

In addition Emmanuel Morowane, the Jeppe hooker, was at the Craven Weeks of 2012 and 2013.

SA Trials
At the end of Craven Week the SARU selectors chose 56 players to go to trials for the SA Schools squad. Those trials will be played at Kempton Park on Saturday, which means that the two players going to trials will not be playing in the match – two of Jeppe's very best players, Tshepo Thulo and Hacjivah Dayimani. The case of Hacjivah Dayimani is especially interesting as he did not go to Craven Week. He and one other were chosen for the trials from the Academy Week, which is special.
Jeppe: Tshepo Thulo, Hacjivah Dayimani
