Kimberley's Derby Classic Clash

Not only are Noord-Kaap and Diamantveld the best two rugby schools in Kimberley they are, year in and year out amongst the top rugby schools in South Africa. Noord-Kaap was at the prestigious Kearsney Easter Festival and Diamantveld host the prestigious Wildeklawer tournament.

Neither is this year as strong as usual. Both have played eight and lost four matches, but they have played no common opponents. But Noord-Kaap seem to have the stronger fixture list and to have fared better. Diamantveld suffered heavy defeats against Affies, Oakdale, Windhoek Gymnasium and Helpmekaar where Noord-Kaap lost narrowly – by one point to Menlopark, two points to HTS Middelburg, five points to Glenwood and seven points to Outeniqua.

Noord-Kaap have four players back who played for Griquas at the 2016 Craven Week – Cameron Hufke, Jeffrey Muzaza, Justin Murphy and the captain Edrich Brand. In addition Deon van Niekerk and Rory Leijdekkers were at the Academy Week

Diamantveld have three back who were at Craven Week in 2016 – De-An Ackermann, Ashwill Botha and Edwill Speelman who is on the bench for the match this Saturday. Their flyhalf Charles Williams, who scored 12 points against Noord-Kaap in 2015, was at the Academy Week.

The match will be played at the Pirates Rugby Club. the oldest in Griquas, founded in 1884 and named after a Pirates of Penzance performance in Kimberley.
