Klofies shock Monnas

There was only two points' difference  but still a massive surprise in this Premier Interschools match. After all, Monnas are currently fifth on the FNB Top 20 and pushing hard for fourth place while Waterkloof are unranked.

Waterkloof scored first and led 28-12 with five minutes to play, when Monnas came back with 14 points from two tries, just not enough to win.

Monnas kicked off but Klofies went on the attack with a strong break by their outstanding flank Juandré Jooste. Monnas were penalised, Klofies tapped and Julian Bogner, an athlete who had an excellent game, powered through two defenders and scored. 5-0 after 9 minutes.

Prop Jason Hattingh then had a long break and Klofies were attacking again. Monnas were penalised at a tackle and fullback Séan Grobler goaled. 8-0 at a mystified Ras van Rooyen.

At this stage the Monnas flyhalf, Byron-Lee Wentink, went off injured and was replaced by Wian van der Walt,

Then Monnas started to do the expected. They won a tighthead at a scrum near Klofies' line, bashed and won a five-metre scrum of their own. They bashed again, went left and Douw Scheepers scored. 8-5 after 23 minutes.

Klofies kicked off, won a turnover and Jooste burst away for his first try of the match. 13-5.

Stephan le Roux scored the next try. He is a 2-metres tall lock who grew suddenly and moved from wing to lock. Here he ran like threequarter breaking and striding over. Van der Walt converted, 13-12.

Klofies came close again when Jooste raced down the left touchline but the half-time score came with Klofies one point ahead. At full time they would be two points ahead.

From an attacking scrum, Klofies bashed and then scrumhalf Divan Roelofse gave to Bogner who gave inside to Joost who scored under the poles. Grobler converted and Klofies led 20-12 after 39 minutes.

When Klofies were penalised inside the Monnas' 22, Monnas tapped and went left. But Scheepers was tackled, Bogner won a turnover and Wikus Lindeque scored in the right corner. 25-12 after 45 minutes.

Two penalties set Monnas on the attack but suddenly lock Richard van den Berg went striding down the midfield, Monnas were penalised at the tackle and Grobler goaled. 28-12 with 18 minutes to play.

Monnas' determination dominated those 18 minutes.

Tristan Dullisear broke free. Waterkloof were penalised twice and Monnas had an attacking line-out. Brandon threw in but Klofies knocked the ball towards their side. It was untidy, and Brandon grabbed the ball and scored under the poles. 28-19 with five minutes to play.

Back came Monnas. Klofies were penalised. Monnas tapped and bashed and substitute prop Tumi Mononyane. 28-26 and just time for the kick-off. Monnas ran and ran but lost the ball in a knock-on and Bogner kicked out for Klofies' first victory over Monnas since 2012.
