Klofies vs Affies in Pretoria
Two of South Africa's top rugby schools, Hoërskool Waterkloof and Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool, Klofies and Affies, clash in Pretoria on Saturday. Another epic contest is expected.
Last year there were some 15 000 spectators when Affies won in the last minute and there will be a great turnout at Klofies this year. Last year Waterkloof dominated the first half and scored two tries, leading 12-7 at half-time and it was then that Waterkloof made their biggest statement, they outscored Affies by three tries but Waterkloof lost in the dying minutes of the match against Affies.
It is early in the 2014 season. Neither side has played much.
Waterkloof beat Harrismith easily but lost 24-10 to Paarl Gim and 35-21 to the strong Sentraal side of Bloemfontein. Affies have had just one schools match, beating Helpmekaar 36-24
Waterkloof’s captain Dewald Lindeque and vice-captain JP Snyman agree that: “Klofies has a score to settle after their disappointing loss last year. We look forward to play against Affies they are a strong team and it’s an honour to play against them.”
Results Down the Years
Klofies were founded in 1979 and so younger than Affies who were founded in 1920 and have had the better of matches between the two since 1987. After the sad, five-year stand-off that came after the four-match year of 2006, the sportsmanship between the two schools has been remarkable.
