Kwaggas hooker slots penalty to sink Maritzburg College
WRAP: Outeniqua claimed a big scalp while the leading schools flexed their muscles in the second round of festival fixtures staged in Kimberley and Gqeberha.
Outeniqua made a statement in the first two weeks of the season, when they scored more than 100 points across matches against Worcester Gim and Nico Malan.
Since then, the Kwaggas have recorded a 22-26 away loss to Paarl Boys, wins against KES, Boland Landbou and Pearson, as well as a draw with Waterkloof.
While they were well beaten in the first round of the Wildeklawer Tournament in Kimberley this past weekend – losing 26-55 to Affies – they edged Maritzburg College 30-29 on Monday. The latter result is certainly worth celebrating, and the manner of victory will be remembered for years to come.
Martizburg College kicked a late penalty to take what appeared to be a decisive lead.
There was more drama to come, though, after they were penalised for a high tackle in the final minute of the game.
The Kwaggas turned to hooker Keaton Olivier, who then showed remarkable composure and skill to slot the winning goal.
It’s been a dramatic couple of weeks for South African schoolboy rugby, with some of the less fancied teams claiming shock wins against the leading teams.
Over the long weekend, however, many of the top dogs hit back.
Paul Roos edged Garsfontein and Oakdale, while Affies prevailed against Outeniqua and Paarl Boys – snatching a late try to win the latter match.
Paarl Gim put 45 points past Helpmekaar before scoring 47 against DHS. Grey College bounced back from three consecutive losses to thump Noordheuwel and Jeppe.
Monument also had a successful weekend, scoring wins against DHS and Nico Malan.
Stellenberg, the top-ranked side in the country, bolstered their record with convincing victories against Maritzburg College and Wildeklawer Tournament hosts Diamantveld.
Down at the Grey High Festival in in Gqeberha, the hosts claimed victories over Michaelhouse and Glenwood.
Rondebosch racked up big wins against Glenwood and KES to get their season back on track.
“Festival season” may be done and dusted, but the action will continue this coming weekend.
The Noordvaal Cup will gather momentum while KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape will play host to several big derbies.
