Maritzburg College meet Hilton

Hilton will come down from their mountain with 26 rugby teams and 18 hockey teams to take on the traditional powerhouse of KwaZulu Natal schools – Maritzburg College.

It will be the 165th recorded match between the two schools though it is reputed that the rivalry began in 1875. Of the 164 matches played, College has won many more than Hilton, despite Hilton's dominance in the 1920s.

Whatever the result matches between the two are normally honourable.

In 2013 Hilton had a rare but impressive victory beating College 38-22 up at Hilton. This year a look at recent history would suggest that College are the favourites, not only for playing on iconic Goldstone's.

This Season's Results

At present College are ranked 15th on the FNB Top 20. Hilton are not ranked.

Maritzburg College have played 11 matches, winning 8, drawing with KES and losing two. The two they lost to are Wynberg (17-16) and Glenwood (27-14), schools ranked 13th and 8th.

Hilton have won three of their seven matches. They have not played any schools in the FNB Top 20.

College have played more and against somewhat stronger opposition and have done better.

Last weekend College were well beaten 27-14 by Glenwood in Durban while Hilton did not play.

Common Opponents

They have three opposing schools in common – Kearsney, Northwood of Durban and St Andrew's of Grahamstown

College beat Kearsney 29-17, Northwood 31-6 and St Andrew's 23-20.

Hilton lost to Kearsney 31-17, Northwood 32-14 and St Andrew's 37-18.

Experience

Outside centre Marcel Coetzee played for KwaZulu Natal at Craven Week in 2013. He is still at outside centre. Hilton did not have a player in the 2013 Craven Week player.

Craven Week

Each school has one player in the 2014 KwaZulu Natal Craven Week side – Tristan Blewitt of Hilton and for College Xolisa Guma from Khayalitsha in the Cape and played for Boland in the Grant Khomo Week while he was at Hoërskool Swartland in Malmesbury.

In the KwaZulu Natal Academy Week side Hilton have flank Jayson Gouws while College have four players – Masikane Mazwi, who is a hooker who can play prop, flank Hayden Tharrat, prop Mcedisi Dlamini and centre Kudzai Munangi who came to College from St John's.

College have four changes from the team beaten by Glenwood. The halves Mac van der Linde and Mat Seba return from injury, Matt Kriel moved to fullback to replace Brandon Holder and Jordan Koekemoer, often a flyhalf, comes in at inside centre. In a change to the pack Slade Stuart plays lock in the stead of Justin Gold.
