Monnas begin Noordvaal Cup with a bang
WRAP: Monument and Garsfontein scored big wins in the opening round of the Noordvaal Cup while Hilton edged Michaelhouse in the KwaZulu-Natal derby on Saturday.
Garsfontein got their Noordvaal Cup title defence off to the perfect start when they claimed a 49-24 win against Helpmekaar in Pretoria on Saturday.
The three-time champions were overshadowed by Monument, however, as Jannie du Plessis’ charges went on to hammer EG Jansen 85-19 in the clash staged in Boksburg.
In other Noordvaal Cup fixtures, Middelburg edged Menlopark 26-25 while Waterkloof proved too strong for Rustenburg, winning 31-10.
Elsewhere, Stellenberg racked up yet another victory when they beat Wynberg 38-10 at home on Friday.
While Stellenberg remain the No. 1 schoolboy side in the country, they will face sterner tests in the coming weeks when they travel to Paarl Boys and Oakdale.
Down in KwaZulu-Natal, the first instalment of the Midlands derby series between Hilton and Michaelhouse lived up to the hype – and the hosts emerged with a narrow 23-21 victory.
With that result, Hilton remain unbeaten and have stretched their winning streak to seven matches.
Following three straight losses, Westville may be disappointed with the 14-14 draw they recorded at Kearsney on Saturday.
Maritzburg College will be happier with their 45-5 win over St Charles.
Meanwhile in Makhanda, Graeme College scored a 34-22 derby win at St Andrews.
Saturday’s result marked Graeme’s ninth win in 10 matches – they lost to Selborne recently – and strengthened their claim to the Eastern Cape crown.
That said, Dale College have also enjoyed a successful start to the season.
Dale thrashed Port Rex 52-24 this past Saturday to record their eighth victory in 10 matches.
They will take some momentum into the next big regional clash against Selborne, who are coming off a 72-15 rout of Ooskus Gim.
