Monument stun DHS, Grey down House

WRAP: Monument and Grey High were among the big winners in the first round of fixtures staged at the Wildeklawer Tournament in Kimberley and the festival in Gqeberha.

Much was expected of the leading KwaZulu-Natal sides after they claimed a series of victories at the recent festivals staged over the Easter period.

Few would have predicted that Durban High School would fall to Monument in the first round of the Wilderklawer Tournament, or that Michaelhouse – fresh off their wins against Affies and Jeppe – would lose to the hosts at the Grey High Festival.

After a poor start to the season, Monument have hit back to win four games in a row.

Jannie du Plessis’ side beat DHS 41-27 in Kimberley on Saturday – handing the KZN team their second-straight defeat.

Other than that, the first round of fixtures in Kimberley were dominated by the so-called top dogs.

Paul Roos bounced back from a recent loss to Stellenberg to edge Garsfontein 21-18 on Friday night. The Maroon Machine fought back from a 0-15 deficit to claim the spoils against a well-drilled Garsfontein outfit.

Stellenberg didn’t have everything their own way against Maritzburg College, but held on for a 24-19 win on Saturday.

Oakdale proved too strong for Westville, while Affies and Grey College rebounded from their recent losses to beat Outeniqua and Noordheuwel, respectively.

Paarl Gim thumped Helpmekaar 45-10 to rack up their seventh win on the bounce, while Paarl Boys were made to scrap for a 21-18 victory against Northwood.

Down in Gqeberha, Grey High made a statement at their home tournament when they beat Michaelhouse 28-19 on Saturday.

Rondebosch recovered from their recent loss to Boland Landbou to secure a 42-22 win over Glenwood, while SACS outlasted Selborne 34-26.

Drostdy, who impressed in recent wins against Wynberg and EG Jansen, hammered St Stithians 74-0.

Elsewhere, Hilton continued their unbeaten start to the season when they downed Bishops 26-17.

The Gauteng derby between KES and Pretoria Boys on Saturday was cancelled after the latter side withdrew due to a measles outbreak.
The Wildeklawer Tournament concludes on Monday, with Paul Roos v Oakdale and Boishaai v Affies among the pick of the fixtures.

Down in Gqeberha, the hosts will tackle Glenwood while Drostdy take aim at Selborne.
