Paul Roos outlast Boishaai, Gimmies march on

SCHOOLS WRAP: Paul Roos and Paarl Gim claimed significant victories on the weekend to bolster their impressive records, while Affies and Garsfontein secured big wins in the north.

Over the past two months, South African schoolboy rugby has witnessed a high number of upsets, as well as the emergence of another potential powerhouse in Stellenberg.

Some of the more established schools have recovered from their early-season slips, while Grey College and Paarl Boys have continued to lose big matches and are in danger of finishing 2026 with relatively poor records.

Boishaai went into the clash against Paul Roos this past Saturday needing a win to get their season back on track.

They certainly made a statement in the previous match against Stellenberg – winning 29-7 at Brug Street – but travelled to the Markotter Stadium in Stellenbosch with a point to prove against their old Cape Winelands rivals.

On the day, Paul Roos controlled the contest, and Boishaai were forced to play catch-up for much of the game.

The final score of 28-22 flattered Boishaai, as Paul Roos never looked like losing the match.

The result sees the Maroon Machine boosting their 2026 record to 11 wins in 12 games, with their only loss coming at Stellenberg last month.

Boishaai have much to rectify in the coming weeks, as they build towards the season finale against Paarl Gim on August 1.

Since losing 19-20 to Stellenberg in their first match of the season, Gimmies have won 11 matches in a row.

Pieter Rossouw’s charges have surpassed 40 points on nine occasions, and have won those 11 matches by a margin of 15 points or more.

Gimmies were in an especially ruthless mood at Wynberg this past Saturday – leading 40-7 at halftime, before going on to complete a 61-14 victory.

Elsewhere in the Western Cape, Stellenberg bounced back from their recent loss to Boishaai to beat Rondebosch 33-26 in Bellville, while Boland Landbou hammered Milnerton 83-0.

Durbanville were tipped to claim a monumental win against Bishops, but in the end, the boys from the southern suburbs hung on for a 37-36 victory.

The result brings an end to Bishops’ five-game losing streak, but they will have their hands full when they travel to Paul Roos next week.

Up north, Affies followed up their landmark win against Grey College with a resounding 46-28 result against KES.

Garsfontein strengthened their bid for a fourth-consecutive Noordvaal Cup title when they thumped Menlopark 52-20, while Monument claimed their ninth win on the bounce when they downed
Helpmekaar 36-24.

Garsies and Monnas are set to meet in Krugersdorp on 6 June in a clash that may well determine who finishes at the top of the Noordvaal Cup standings.

At this stage, Garsies are still in contention for the unofficial No.1 ranking, having won nine of their 11 matches – and having beaten Stellenberg, Boishaai and Affies.

In other matches staged around the country, Jim Fouche edged Diamantveld 23-22 in the Free State – a surprising result, given that Diamantveld beat Monument earlier this season.

Northwood hit back after a disappointing defeat to Maritzburg College to beat Jeppe 30-6 in Durban, while Grey High secured a 42-22 win against St Andrews in Makhanda.
