Paul Roos play Gimmies

Back from their jaunt to Japan for the Sanix World Rugby Youth Tournament, which they won handsomely, Paul Roos will be playing Paarl Gim on Saturday and certain to find their neighbours across the N1 far stronger opposition than any they met in their six matches in Japan.

The match is part of the Premier Interschools series and so will be broadcast on television.

The two schools have long histories and traditions. This year Paul Roos are celebrating their 150th birthday. Although eight years younger than Paarl Gim, they started playing rugby earlier, mainly because the Gim headmaster was not keen on the game, telling his boys they should work in the garden if they wanted exercise.

Nonetheless the game got going and both schools have made massive contributions to rugby in South Africa, not least in the number of Old Boys who have become Springboks – Paul Roos 51, which is more than any other school in South Africa, and Gim 30, including Jean de Villiers. South Africa's noble captain. Paul Roos's latest is Willie le Roux, Gim's Handré Pollard.

This match will be one of the season's great games in South Africa, certainly in the Western Province where Paul Roos and the two Paarl schools are considered, year in and year out, the strongest sides in the Province.

Both teams are used to playing big opponents and beating them. This is a match they will look forward to, a match to remember.

Achievements

Neither side has players who went to Craven Week last year.

Joshua Vermeulen, Muammir Salie and Dean van Tonder of Paul Roos were in the 2014 Western Province Academy Week  team as were Taigh Schoor and  Johan Visser of Paarl Gim while Paarl Gim's loosehead André Booysen was at the Grant Khomo Week.

Experience

Paul Roos have four back who played for last year's team – Joshua Vermeulen, who was a wing last year, centre Nico Leonard, lock Louis Conradie and burly prop Muammir Salie.

Paarl Gim have three back – centre Taigh Schoor, flank Gustav Marais and lock Ernst van Rhyn.
