Playing Time for School Matches
It includes time matters within matches.
School Time
Definitions:
Playing time: the time that has been played excluding time lost as defined in Law 5 – Time.
Running/Actual Time: continuous elapsed time (includes time lost for any reasons).
High Schools
1. The High Schools 1st team game should last no longer than 70 minutes of playing time.
a. Sin bin = 10 minutes playing time.
b. Half-time break = 10 minutes running time.
2. Other age groups:
a. Under-14 and Under-15 = 25 minutes playing time per half.
i. Sin bin = 5 minutes playing time.
ii. Half-time break = 5 minutes running time.
b. Under-16 = 30 minutes playing time per half.
i. Sin bin = 5 minutes playing time.
ii. Half-time break = 5 minutes running time.
c. Open sides up to 35 minutes playing time per half.
i. If played for 30 minutes or less playing time per half
• Sin bin = 5 minutes playing time
• Half-time break is 5 minutes running time
ii. If played for 35 minutes playing time per half
• Sin bin = 10 minutes playing time
• Half-time break = 10 minutes running time.
Primary School
With respect to Primary School rugby the following running time is applicable:
1. Two halves of 25 minutes running time each will be played for Under-13 only.
a. Sin bin = 5 minutes running time.
b. Half-time break is 5 minutes running time.
2. For the age group Under-9 to Under-12 a match comprises two halves of twenty (20) minutes running time.
a. Sin bin = 5 minutes running time.
b. Half-time break is 5 minutes running time.
The only occasions when above is altered is when permission is sought from SARU for tournaments such as the National Youth Weeks, etc, because of TV schedules and/or other factors.
