Potch Volkies captain - Ruan Nel

Potch Volkies skipper Ruan Nel is hoping to inspire his young team to turn the tide against local rival Potch Gimmies in their FNB Classic Clash on Saturday.

The dynamic and mobile No.8 says that being named captain of the first team this year has been the highlight of his rugby career so far.

"It's a huge honour and privilege to represent my school and my team as first team captain. I'm massively greatful," he said.

Volies have lost the last two FNB Classic Clashes against Gimmies, and Nel was part of the team that went down last year so he is determined to turn that around.

"Gimmies have won the last two Classic Clashes, but it's always a 50/50 affair on the day. We have quite a young team which consists mostly of grade 11s. We have one long term injury to one of our locks, but we'll field our best team on Saturday," he said.

Although his team's form has been a little patchy this year, Nel knows that they will rise to the occasion this weekend.

"Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard. We must think positive thoughts and to be motivated throughout the week. We've worked hard, so there is nothing more to say. We'll leave everything on the field on Saturday," he promised.

Nel, who plans to study law at NWU next year, is expecting a "hard and physical approach up front, and a fast game out wide" against a Gimmies team that will be just as fired up.
