Pretoria Neighbours Clash

It's a massive match in Pretoria when these two big boys' schools meet in a Premier Interschools match on Saturday – Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool  and Pretoria Boys High.

They live across the road from each other, close to Loftus Versfeld, proximity adding spice to the rivalry, though both sides insist that they are close friends off the field and that the Boer-Brit thing is long dead. But that friendliness makes them all the keener to win, it seems, and for both schools this is the big match of the year, the match which defines success or failure, not just because it is the last match of the season.

For one thing they respect each other as schools and for another they are unafraid to play anybody and for another they do it for fun, not as a part of any trophy hunt.

Season So Far

It has not been a great season for either school. Affies have played 13 matches, winning six and losing seven – not their usual form at all. They had good wins over two really strong sides – Selborne and Oakdale but lost to Waterkloof, Monument, HTS Middelburg, Paarl Gim, Grey Bloem, which was a thrilling match, lost 42-31, Maritzburg College and, last Saturday, Glenwood. They were for a while ranked on the FNB Top 20 but have recently slipped off it.

Pretoria Boys High have played 18 matches. of which they have won five. They have not beaten any Top 20 side but have lost to six of them.

SA Schools

After the Craven Week a South African schools trial was held in Kempton Park and then an SA Schools side was chosen to play England, France and Wales later in the month.

Eduan Keyter, the enterprising Affies' fullback, went to trials and was chosen for SA Schools.
