Queen’s win local derby
On Saturday 9 August, Queen’s College and Hangklip Hoerskool, clashed for the 50th game between these two schools which saw Queen’s College win the local derby 61-7.
Queen’s played with a slight breeze at their backs and this allowed them to control the territorial battle and they also enjoyed the majority of possession for the first half. Queen’s managed to keep Hangklip pinned down in their own 22m area and this pressure exerted by the visitors enabled Queen’s to charge down a clearance kick and allow Juan du Randt to open the scoring after five minutes and the try was converted by Leroy Kuyler.
The second try of the match was from a set move in which Alan-Graham Rautenbach managed to break through the defensive line and offload to Johan van Heerden who found the Queen’s centre, Yaw Penxe, in space to add to the score. Kuyler added the extra points.
Queen’s now enjoying a surplus of possession managed to recycle the ball through numerous phases and this allowed Du Randt to go over for his second try, after a deft inside pass from flyhalf, Albre Wagener. Hangklip from the kickoff exerted pressure on Queen’s and were rewarded with a penalty on the Queen’s ten metre line; unfortunately Smuts was unsuccessful for the home team as the ball sailed wide.
Queen’s once again started playing in the Hangklip half and from a line out managed to pass the ball to and unmarked ,Ngozi, on the wing who ran it in for the visitors fourth try. Kuyler who was having a good day with the boot added the two extra points. From the kick-off Hangklip failed to kick the ball the required ten metres and this allowed Queen’s to execute a training ground move which saw powerful Queen’s wing Mureguzi score under the posts. Kuyler added the two extra points to take the lead to 35-0 at the break.
Queen’s started the second half much like they finished off the first with the backline fielding a misdirected kick and they took the ball through multiple phases, which enabled Leroy Kuyler to score, his a conversion attempt was unfortunately wide. Queen’s managed to create numerous scoring opportunities but failed to convert the pressure into points. Hangklip then started to apply pressure on the Queen’s line and were awarded a short arm penalty which they took quickly and allowed one of their forwards to score. Smuts added the extra two points for the home team.
Queen’s from the restart managed to exert pressure on the home team and managed to collect a ball overthrown from a Hangklip line out, which saw Du Randt put his centre partner into space and Penxe scored his second try of the afternoon. Although trailing 47-7 Hangklip kept giving of their best and unfortunately could not convert a missed opportunity after the ball was chipped into space behind the Queen’s defensive line only for the ball to go dead in the in goal area.
Queen’s managed to regain their composure and after multiple phases Mureguzi managed score his second try of the match. Kuyler duly added the extra two points.
From the kick off some sloppy handling and inaccurate passing gave Hangklip and opportunity to score, but the chasing player knocked the ball on at the Queen’s line. Queen’s then decided to run the ball from their own goal line and were lucky not to concede an interception after the Hangklip player once again knocked the ball on.
Queen’s then exercised some patience and the accuracy returned to their game which allowed, Penxe, to score his hatrick. Kuyler added the two points to make the final score 61-7 to Queen’s College.
