It is always a fun occasion with top teams playing from three in the afternoon till just before half past eight at night. For the players it is an experience to remember.

Schools in the Western Province, used to do what they now do in Northvaal and Free State – play for trophies. In the Western Province this lasted from 1898 to 1931.

After that shields and cups were ditched and matches played for their own sake. But then the schools organisers introduced a Schools Day at Newlands, a knock-out competition for first XVs and Under-15s. That took place on a Wednesday and lasted from 1932 to 1950 when the 'new' grandstand was being built at Newlands.

The present schools day format dates back to 2004.

The matches are played in two halves of 20 minutes each and without kicks at goal.
