Seeking Treasure on the Goldfields
They are both in Welkom, a city built on mines after World War II when the Free State Goldfields were developed. The two schools grew up with the town, both co-ed schools of nearly a 1000 pupils.
The rugby union was first known as Northern Free State but, along with several other unions the name has been changed, in this case to a mythical creature, part lion, part bird, which guards treasure.
For the two schools the greatest treasure each year is victory in this interschools match which has an exciting build-up for the whole town.
Gimmies have generally done better than Gouties. The biggest score in the match was just last year but Gouties won just the year before that.
Season so Far
At present Welkom Gimnasium is ranked 20th on the FNB Top 20 while Goudveld is not ranked at all.
Welkom Gim had played 15 matches, winning 12, drawing one and losing to Grey College of Bloemfontein and Oakdale.
Goudveld has played 12, won six and lost six to Dale, Bethlehem Voortrekker, Waterkloof, Diamantveld, Witteberg and Pionier of Vryheid.
