St.John's trump Parktown

In a battle of Jaohannesburg rivals, St.John's defeated a gutsy Parktown side in a Classic Clash 32-26 at St.John's on Saturday.

The atmosphere was electric as the televised Classic Clash lured a strong crowd. Both teams were confident going into the crunch game, having each won a previous Classic Clash over the past two years.

The first-half saw the home-side open the scoring through a Nicholas Zille long-ranged penalty to put St.John's 3-0 up. Parktown though answered quickly with a try in the corner after left wing Michael Tambwe powered his way over the line in the corner to put Parktown in the lead 5-3.

St. John's created a line-out opportunity in the Parktown red zone, and used a well-formed maul to drive over for a Shean Edwards try.

A butchered St.John's line-out in their 22m handed possession over to Parktown and they capitalised scoring near the poles through skipper Siyanda Mlambo.

In the second-half, St.John's upped the tempo early and scored after 44 minutes with Thomas Montgomery shrugging off defenders to dive over for a try.

St.John's kept the momentum and Franz-Joseph Retief made a 30 metre strong run, handing-off the last line of defence to score in the corner.

St.Johns were in control of the game, and they scored another try through some good forward play for Edwards' second try of the game.

Parktown worked their way back into contention, and Liam Clay muscled his way over to add 5 points to the Parktown tally.

The home-side managed to hold onto their lead despite playing a man-down for ten minutes after Montgomery received a yellow card.
