Stellenberg march on, Grey bounce back
WRAP: Stellenberg edged Oakdale while Grey College beat Paarl Boys High in another dramatic round of schoolboy rugby on the weekend.
Questions were asked about Stellenberg’s ability to win on the road in the lead-up to the big fixture against Oakdale in Riversdale.
Oakdale blew hot and cold in 2026, but have been among the leading teams in recent seasons, and have proved especially difficult to beat “on the farm”.
Prior to this weekend, Stellenberg had won 10 of their 11 matches – including fixtures against top dogs such as Paarl Gim, Grey College and Paul Roos.
The next phase of the schedule was always going to provide a sterner test, with their first proper away fixture in Riversdale, followed by a trip to Paarl Boys.
Fast forward to the present, where the Jade Brigade have come through the battle on the farm with a gritty 15-13 win.
The recent result marks Stellenberg’s seventh consecutive victory. If they win their next match against Paarl Boys, they will complete a clean sweep of the so-called top dogs (although they won’t play Affies this season).
The May 16 clash will be a crucial game for Boishaai, in light of their recent defeat to Grey College.
Grey sustained three consecutive losses earlier this season and have been out to prove a point in subsequent weeks.
While they were always going to be favourites in Bloemfontein, they were made to fight for the 31-21 victory against a team that was ranked No.1 in the country last season.
Several other results around the country were more one-sided.
Affies thrashed Jeppe 78-10, Paul Roos hammered Durbanville 64-19, and Paarl Gim smashed Boland Lanbou 64-15.
While many of the fixtures in the Eastern and Southern Cape were cancelled due to heavy rains and flooding, Graeme thumped Cambridge 90-21, and Dale secured a valuable 31-27 win over Selborne.
Up in Gauteng, Menlopark claimed a somewhat surprising 38-31 win over Helpmekaar, while Monument and Garsfontein strengthened their respective positions at the top of the Noordvaal Cup log with victories against Noordheuwel and Waterkloof.
The Sharks Rugby Day at Hilton served up some interesting results, with Kearsney beating Michaelhouse 32-31, Northwood edging Westville 19-14, and Maritzburg College stunning DHS 18-17.
Hilton downed Glenwood 42-7 to extend their winning run to eight matches.
With five games left on their schedule, Hilton could go on to finish 2026 undefeated – although fixtures against Northwood (home) and Michaelhouse (away) may be especially tough.
