The Grahamstown Clash
St Andrew's gathered mind, heart and sinew to beat Graeme College 31-17 in an FNB Classic Clash at St Andrew's on Saturday afternoon in a match that dates back to 1878.
After a hectic holiday sporting schedule, St Andrew’s College returned to Lower Field on Saturday to play their annual Classic Clash against Graeme College, keen to get their home season under way.
The first half was a scrappy affair with both teams making needless errors and giving lots of penalties away. The teams went into the break at seven points all after St Andrew’s College scored through a neat little break by centre Tom Lane.
The second half was a different story completely as College found their feet and gradually gained control of the match as they put their visitors under pressure. First, Grant Dixie scored to give St Andrew’s College a lead after some good handling by backs and forwards. Then it was the turn of Brendan Owen and Brian Ferguson to extend the St Andrew’s lead before Peter Kroon scored on the hooter to wrap up a good day for the St Andrew’s College 1st team. Three of the tries were converted as St Andrew’s College ran out eventual winners 31-17.
Well done to all the St Andrew’s College teams and our visitors, Graeme, who played well after the break.
*Peter Reid, a provincial scrumhalf in his playing days, has been the headmaster of Graeme for the last 22 years and retires this year. It is thus the last of these FNB Classic Clashes for him.
