The Magnificent Seven: The heavyweights that shaped the 2026 school season

Paarl Gymnasium

OPINION: Every school rugby season begins with expectation, but only a handful of First XVs possess the pedigree to dominate the national conversation.

In 2026, seven traditional powerhouses have consistently featured in the Rugby365 rankings: Paarl Gymnasium, Garsfontein, Paul Roos Gymnasium, Stellenberg, Affies, Grey College and Paarl Boys’ High.

Each has produced moments of brilliance, while each has also endured defining setbacks that have ultimately shaped the national rankings.

1. Paarl Gymnasium

The First Rugby XV team of Paarl Gymnasium have once again demonstrated why they remain the benchmark of South African schoolboy rugby. Their season has been built on ruthless consistency, a dominant set-piece and an attacking game capable of overwhelming even the strongest opposition.

Their only defeat came early in the campaign, a narrow 20-19 loss to Stellenberg. But was it really a setback? Stellenberg emerged as the giant slayers of 2026, also defeating Paul Roos and Grey College. Rather than derail Gim’s season, that defeat seemed to sharpen their focus.Since then, the Gimmies have responded like true champions, compiling an outstanding record of 12 victories from 13 matches while remaining firmly in contention for the No. 1 ranking.

What makes their campaign even more remarkable is the manner in which they have dismantled elite opposition. Victories of 51-22 over Affies, 29-14 against Grey College, 68-22 over Paul Roos, 49-13 against Oakdale and 47-7 against DHS underline their dominance.

The 2026 Paarl Gymnasium side may well go down as one of the finest schoolboy teams South Africa has ever produced, despite not finishing the season unbeaten, the way they dismantled top opposition speaks volumes. Yet one final obstacle remains. Their fierce local rivals, Paarl Boys’ High, await on 1 August in a derby capable of defining both teams’ seasons.

2. Garsfontein

Garsfontein’s 2026 First XV campaign has been one of the country’s most impressive, firmly establishing the Pretoria school among South Africa’s elite.

The “Bere” have once again shown why they are Pretoria’s standard-bearers. Physical, disciplined and exceptionally difficult to break down, Garsfontein have recorded several outstanding victories, including a thrilling 38-34 win over Affies, a hard-fought 21-20 triumph against Stellenberg and a memorable victory over Paarl Boys’ High during the North-South Tournament.

However, inconsistency against opponents such as Jeppe prevented them from completely controlling their own destiny. Despite that setback, they remain firmly among the country’s elite and continue to challenge for a podium finish.

The Blue Bulls champions’ rugby programme continues to grow stronger every season. While Garsfontein traditionally produced outstanding A teams, they now boast exceptional depth throughout their B, C, D  teams across all age groups.

Their season is far from over. The Virseker Noordvaal Cup still awaits, where Waterkloof and Monument’s formidable “Wit Bulle” could prove to be their biggest obstacles in the pursuit of silverware.

3. Paul Roos Gymnasium

Paul Roos Gymnasium’s 2026 campaign has once again underlined why the Stellenbosch giants remain among South Africa’s premier rugby schools.

This is arguably their most balanced First XV in several seasons. Clinical at the breakdown and composed under pressure, they have matched Paarl Gimnasium almost stride for stride throughout much of the campaign.

Their only significant setbacks came against Paarl Gymnasium and Stellenberg. Stellenberg briefly halted their momentum. However, Paul Roos responded impressively and quickly returned to winning ways, until they faced Gim. Gim exposed areas that still required refinement. Despite these setbacks, Paul Roos remaining genuine contenders for a place on the national podium.

Among their standout performances were victories over Affies (46-28), Garsfontein (21-18), Paarl Boys’ High (28-22) and Oakdale (15-13).

One final challenge still awaits. Their traditional clash against Grey College, arguably the second-biggest derby in South African schoolboy rugby, promises to provide another fitting conclusion to an outstanding season.

4. Stellenberg

Perhaps no team has surprised the South African school rugby landscape in 2026 more than Stellenberg. With an increasing number of families from Gauteng relocating to the Western Cape, schools such as Stellenberg, Durbanville, and HTS Drostdy have become major forces, benefiting from the depth of talent that cannot all be accommodated at the country’s traditional rugby giants. Once regarded as dangerous outsiders, Stellenberg have developed into genuine title contenders over the past eight years.

Victories in 2026 over Paarl Gimnasium, Grey College, and Paul Roos Gymnasium during an extraordinary run elevated the Jade Brigade from hopeful challengers to legitimate No. 1 contenders. Those performances proved they could consistently defeat South Africa’s most established rugby powerhouses. Although they suffered a defeat to a strong Garsfontein side earlier in the season, Stellenberg have firmly established themselves as one of the country’s form teams.

The one question that remains is whether they possess the same squad depth as the other teams in the top five. Their defeat to Paarl Boys’ High exposed signs of fatigue, with the Jade Brigade looking far removed from the energetic outfit that had captured the nation’s attention. Unlike some of the traditional heavyweights, Stellenberg do not have the luxury of regularly rotating a squad of 25 top-quality players like the rest of the top 5 giants.

Nevertheless, the 2026 Jade Brigade will undoubtedly be remembered as the greatest Stellenberg side in the school’s history and remain strong contenders for a place on the national podium.

5. Affies

Affies entered the 2026 season carrying enormous expectations but struggled to find consistency against the country’s strongest opposition. While their renowned forward power and squad depth remain unquestionable, costly defeats in key fixtures saw them surrender valuable ground in the national rankings.

Heavy early-season losses to Paul Roos Gymnasium (46–28) and Paarl Gimnasium (51–22), defeats to their Blue Bulls rivals Garsfontein and Michaelhouse, placed them firmly on the back foot. However, true to their proud tradition, Affies responded impressively, rediscovering the form that has made them one of South Africa’s premier rugby programmes. Outstanding victories over Paarl Boys’ High and Grey College reminded everyone of their quality.

Affies remain capable of defeating any side on their day and continue to command enormous respect as one of the country’s elite school rugby institutions.

6. Paarl Boys’ High

Paarl Boys’ High began the season with genuine ambitions of competing for the national No. 1 ranking and spent much of the campaign among the country’s top-ranked teams. However, unexpected setbacks—including defeats to Garsfontein, Affies, and Grey College, as well as a draw against Oakdale—cost them valuable momentum and, at this stage, a place inside the top five.

Despite those disappointments, Boishaai remain one of the most dangerous teams in South African school rugby and are more than capable of upsetting any opponent, particularly as the traditional derby season approaches its climax. If there is one side capable of defeating Paarl Gimnasium when they are at their very best, it is Boishaai.

The Paarl derby has a unique ability to bring out the best in both teams. As history has shown time and again, form often counts for very little on derby day, and the favourites do not always walk away with the coveted Paarl bragging rights.

7. Grey College

Grey College’s 2026 campaign has been one of frustration rather than failure. Seeing the Bloemfontein giants anywhere outside the nation’s top three is almost unheard of. Traditionally the benchmark against which every other school is measured, Grey have produced glimpses of their trademark brilliance but have repeatedly found themselves on the wrong side of several heavyweight encounters. Defeats to Paarl Gimnasium, Affies and Stellenberg exposed defensive frailties rarely associated with one of South Africa’s most decorated rugby institutions. Yet writing off Grey College has never been a wise move. Few teams possess their pedigree, resilience and ability to rise when it matters most, and with their historic derby against Paul Roos still to come, they have one final opportunity to remind the schoolboy rugby fraternity exactly why Grey College remains South Africa’s greatest rugby factory.

Best wishes to all the boys playing Craven week over the school holidays. Recover well, stay fit, and we look forward to another exciting chapter of South African schoolboy rugby when the season resumes.
