Top schools in Paarl

On Saturday, Paarl Gim play hosts to Paul Roos of Stellenbosch in a top clash between Western Province schools, both founded in the 19th century, both playing rugby for well over a century.

The match will be one of three televised on Saturday. Also showing will be Affies vs Grey  Bloem, on Supersport at 14.45, SACS vs Bishops on 319 at 11.40 and this one on 210 at 12.00. With Super Rugby it will be a day for the box. If the winter weather in the Cape persists it will certainly be a comfortable option.

The match between Paul Roos and Paarl Gim is one of the 12 Premier Interschools matches this year.

Both schools feature in the Top 20 – Paarl Gim at 11th and Paul Roos at 14th – close enough to =suggest a close contest.`

Results this Year

Gimmies have played six matches. They beat Waterkloof, Bellville, Oakdale and Affies – the last 40-7 in an astonishing display of rugby. They lost to Menlopark and then 15-14 to Grey Bloem.

Paul Roos also played Waterkloof but they lost 19-13. That was the only match the two had in common. They also lost dramatically to Grey PE with the last kick of a match that they seemed set to win. They beat Swartland, Die Brandwag of , Nelspruit and Dr EG Jansen, the last 30-10. They beat KES 67-0.

It suggests that both schools are capable of brilliant rugby.
