Westville target perfect season

PREVIEW: Westville will finish their season unbeaten if they beat Michaelhouse this weekend, while Garsfontein and Wynberg could make a statement in the fixtures staged in Gauteng and the Western Cape.

Following this weekend’s fixtures, there will be one more round of matches before the school teams take a break, and the focus shifts to the Craven Week tournament in early July.

For some of the leading schools in KwaZulu-Natal, the school season will come to an end this weekend.

Westville has been the best side in the region, winning 12 matches in a row.

That incredible run includes a 33-28 victory over Durban High School – the leading team in KZN last season – as well as interprovincial wins against Rustenburg, EG Jansen and KES.

At the top of the pyramid, Paarl Gym and Paarl Boys continue to dominate, and their meeting in August may well double as a national final.

Meanwhile, Oakdale thrashed Outeniqua last weekend to remind all and sundry why they are one of the country’s leading sides, while Queen’s College claimed yet another scalp down in the Eastern Cape.

@Rugby365com takes a closer look at some of the big match-ups scheduled for this weekend.

MICHAELHOUSE V WESTVILLE

Westville are coming off a 33-15 win against Kearsney, and will be desperate to finish their 2025 campaign with a 13th consecutive victory.

Michaelhouse have endured a challenging season, recording four wins, two draws and eight losses.

It’s worth noting that Michaelhouse lost seven of those eight fixtures by eight points or less – and that they went down 25-31 to Maritzburg College at home last week.

That said, they managed to beat Westville 25-17 the last time these teams met in early 2024, and won 36-22 when this fixture was last staged at Michaelhouse in 2023.

GARSFONTEIN V TRANSVALIA

Like Westville, Garsfontein will look to extend their winning streak, which currently sits at four matches.

Garsies are yet to lose in this season’s Noordvaal Cup, a tournament they’ve won two years in a row.

A win against Transvalia this weekend would strengthen Garsies’ position in the standings, ahead of more demanding Noordvaal Cup fixtures against Monument, Noordheuwel and EG Jansen.

Transvalia sustained their first defeat since March when they went down 22-24 to Monument last week.

WYNBERG V PAUL ROOS

Wynberg took a significant step towards a Cape Town southern suburbs clean sweep when they won 38-33 at Rondebosch last week.

Wynberg have already beaten Bishops once this season, and will go into their clash against SACS on 21 June as favourites.

As far as the second leg of this southern suburbs mini series is concerned, Wynberg will play two out of three of those fixtures at home.

Right now, however, they shouldn’t be looking past Paul Roos.

After dominating the schoolboy rugby scene in 2024, the Stellenbosch side waved goodbye to most of their first-choice players.

As a result, they haven’t been as dominant in 2025, losing big matches to Affies, Gimmies, and Boishaai.

It remains to be seen whether one of the teams outside of the top five can knock them over.

Paul Roos were pushed close by Garsfontein, Noordheuwel and Boland Landbou earlier this season, winning each of those matches by seven points or less.

Could Wynberg spring a surprise this week, when they host Corne Uys’ team?

It won’t get any easier for Paul Roos after the term break, when they face Rondebosch at home, before closing out their season with away fixtures against Oakdale and Grey College.
