Wildeklawer Day 2

And what a great start as the scoring went up and down and the match was decided by the last act of the match which had a 34-32 score

The day ended with an intense conflict.

Paarl Boys' High vs Affies, 29-25

Intense. It is not often that a rugby match is played at this intensity and that from the first whistle to the last. And the result was decided only at the final whistle which came after Urgene Johannes and Reece Bezuidenhout of Paarl Boys' High had combined to tackle big Louritz van de Schyff out right at the cornerflag, thus preventing an Affies' victory.

Paarl Boys' High scored first when fullback Gianni Lombaard kicked a penalty goal. Look at the scorers to guess at his contribution to the victory.

Affies went on the attack and then scrumhalf Jack Hart passed back to flyhalf Ruan de Swardt and from 38 metres out he kicked a soaring dropped goal. 3-all after five minutes.

The two kicked more points till it was 9-6 to Paarl Boys' High after 19 minutes. Then Lombaard scored a try.

From a scrum on the far left, the ball from eighthman Khanya Ncusane to Michael Visser as Paarl Boys' High went right. Into the line came Lombaard at speed. He went around one, inside another and was far too fast for two other defenders as he went over for his first try, which he converted. 16-6 after 25 minutes.

A penalty gave Affies a line-out and they went through several phases till, on advantage, Marnus Potgieter beat a defender on the inside and scored. 16-11 after 28 minutes.

Another Lombaard penalty made it 19-11 at half time.

Early in the second half tighthead Arno van Wyk showed a remarkable turn of speed as he broke down the midfield. He was tackled, Paarl Boys' High were penalised and Affies had a five-metre line-out. They mauled over the line for a try credited to Schalk Erasmus which De Swardt converted to make the score 19-18 with 24 minutes to play.

Affies were now domuinatibng possession and were playing quickly but mostly one at a time. Van der Schyff had an impressive break but Lombaard got the ball hoofed it downfield to set Paarl Boys' High on the attack. And Lombaard kicked a fifth penalty goal.

Then came an astonishing individual try.

Paarl Boys' High won a turnover in their own half and Lombaard was at flyhalf. He moved forward, chipped over Affies, caught the ball on the full and raced away swerving and stepping and doing it all at great speed and there he was untouched scoring a try, which, inevitably, he converted. 29-18 with 11 minutes to play.

Affies were full of zest and determination. A penalty gave them a five-metre line-out and a maul and a try by Dylan du Preez. De Swardt kicked the conversion and with 7 minutes to play the score was  29-25.

And eventually the match ended with desperation tackling by a wing and a prop right at the Paarl Boys' High cornerflag.

Diamantveld vs HTS Middelburg

Two teams played flat out to the end in an entertaining and increasingly exciting match. The home side, Diamantveld, playing with the late wind, enjoyed more support than the boys from Middelburg and they gave their supporters great hope with a try in the first two minutes when from a line-out on the right flyhalf Charles Williams got a clever pass to centre Etdeon Greyvenstein. Tackled as he headed for the posts, Greyvenstein got a pass away to Jan-Willem van Niekerk. The big man was tackled but got a miracle offload away to Greyvenstein who was back on his feet and scored under the posts. 7-0.

The Greyvenstrein-Van Niekerk combination seemed about to effect another try but this time Van Niekerk's back flick was forward.

Three penalties in quick succession had the Rooibulle attacking and scrumhalf Uys du Preez tapped the third and gave a clever pass back inside to Zander Joubert who scored. 7-all after 13 minutes.

Four minutes later Williams kicked a penalty. Then he forced a half-gap and in the tackle gave to De-An Ackermann who scored. 17-7 after 25 minutes.

From the kick-off Diamantveld came running back but they knocked on.

From a line-out on the right, they mauled and then went wide left and Tim Harding scored in the corner. 22-7, which was the half-time score.

Diamantveld did not score in the second half, spending a lot of it on defence.

When Diamantveld lost the ball inside the HTS Middelburg half, JC Pretorius, a flank, snapped the ball up and raced over 50 metres to score a try. 22-12 after 36 minutes.

The next score came 16 minutes later and again it was the Rooibulle who lifted the tempo of their game after Pretorius's try.

The second one was also long-range.

Diamantveld were penalised at a tackle. They tapped and played to the right where Japie Kleynhans picked up a horrible, low pass and then raced 55 metres past four defenders to score. The important conversion attempt was woeful.

There were eight minutes to play in which neither side gained ascendancy.

Outeniqua vs Monument, 40-25

Two teams, two halves, two different games.

The first half ended with a rampant Outeniqua side leading 34-5. Then Monument changed their game. They started to use their greater size and strength and won the second half 20-6. Outeniqua, who had scored five tries in the first half did not score one in the second.

The teams ended with five tries each. The difference was the goal-kicking. Outeniqua kicked 15 points, Monnas none – not one.

Thinking that a score of 40-25 represented an easy victory is a misrepresentation of what happened.

It took Outeniqua just 37 seconds to open the scoring. They kicked off, they won a turnover and strong centre JP Duvenage handed off an opponent and set Lance Lamprecht free. The eighthman scored in the corner. 5-0.

Monnas ran from well inside their own territory and the ball went through many hands, not caring if they were backs or forwards till flyhalf Luke Rossouw dived over for a try. 5-all after 5 minutes.

The rest of the half belonged to the boys from George.

They nearly scored when a penalty gave them a five-metre line-out but Monnas repelled the front peel and they won a turnover and kicked clear. But Outeniqua counterattacked and Lamprecht ran well and gave to centre Bradley Kiewiet who accelerated past two defenders to score in the left corner. 10-5 after 12 minutes.

Outeniqua seemed certain to score again when JP Stopforth caught the kick-off and strode down the field but a knocked on pass in front of an undefended line kiboshed the try. But Monnas were penalised and Outeniqua goaled. 13-5 after 16 minutes.

When Monnas tried some back play, they dropped the ball and Sean Swart got hold of it and gave it to Duvenage who ran 55 metres down the right to score. 20-5 after 21 minutes and a minute later it was 27-5, for from the kick-off fullback Tristan Fourie broke clean through. Tackled five metres from the goal-line he popped a pass to Duvenage who  had the easy task of scoring.

From the kick-off Fourie broke down the middle of the field again but the attack unravelled at the Monnas 22.

Outeniqua won a Monnas line-out and Wilco du Preez scythed through the defence , running 40 metres straight to the posts. That brought half-time with Outeniqua leading 34-5 and looking confident of a huge victory.

But in the second half the bigger Monnas side got stuck in, using their strength and thoroughly enjoying it. The big men suddenly were energised and got stuck in. They bashed and went wide where Cameron Schutzler scored in the left corner. 34-10 after 32 minutes.

A penalty gave Monnas a line-out and, unsurprisingly, they mauled and Jandré Botha scored. 34-15 after 42 minutes, time to sit up and take notice.

A Monnas maul lumbered 18 metres to the goal-line where PJ Botha fell down for the try. 34-20 after 46 minutes.

The Monnas pack were shattering Outeniqua who only occasional bits of possession.

Monnas mauled again, bashed and went wide where their handling let them down. But they had a penalty, tapped and mauled over for a try credited to PJ Jacobs. It was in a comfortable place but still there was no conversion. 34-25 with 6 minutes to play.

Outeniqua managed to loosen the shackles somewhat and scored two penalty goals in those 6 minutes, the last ending an absorbing encounter,

Paarl Gim vs Dr EG Jansen, 38-22

Last week, Paarl Gim moved up to fourth place on the FNB Top 20, replacing Dr EG Jansen, and here they were meeting on a playing field in sunny Kimberley.

This was a hard match, with more kicking for position than in the previous two matches.

A break off his eighthman's pass sent Zak Burger racing down the right. This led to an attacking scrum and Paarl Gim attacked again but EG Jansen were strong and broke out. Paarl Gim were penalised and scrumhalf Ginter Smuts goaled. 3-0 after 5 minutes. EG Jansen's lead lasted three minutes.

From a line-out Paarl Gim burst ahead with direct forward attack till eighthman Muller Uys scored and flyhalf Theo Boshoff converted 7-3 after 8 minutes. Paarl Gim did not lose their lead.

Paarl Gim won a turnover and the ball went out to fullback Wian van Zyl on the left wing. He ran and then kicked infield. The ball hit the posts padding and rolled out where Uys gathered and scored. 14-3 after 12 minutes.

Paarl Gim came back on the attack and went wide right where wing Jan Jordaan was over in the right corner. 19-3. Paarl Gim had scored three tries in six minutes.

But a long, strong maul brought EG Jansen onto the attack. They went left and flyhalf Ruben Beytel was over in the left corner. Smuts converted from far out. 19-10 after 18 minutes.

EG Jansen kicked deep into the Paarl Gim half where Van Zyl waited for the ball. He immediately ran to his left. He gave to energetic left wing Muller du Plessis who gave inside to Burger who dummied, accelerated and scored a splendid try. 24-10 after 21 minutes.

From the kick-off Van Zyl ran and gave Du Plessis his third run and the wing was not going to be caught as he headed for the posts. 31-10 after 23 minutes.

Paarl Gim kicked and EG Jansen countered. They kicked down towards the Paarl Gim goal-line. Paarl Gim could not control the ball and Beytel scored his second try, this time at the posts. Again Smuts converted. 31-17 after 26 minutes.

That was the half-time score.

After the lavish first half, the scoring was more circumspect in the second half though it started with a flourish when EG Jansen attacked and went right and then left to create a two-man overlap and a hat-trick try for Beytel. 31-22 after 32 minutes.

There was just one other try in the second half.

There could have been an earlier one when Christopher Willemse broke.

The try came from a Paarl Gim scrum on their left. The ball went 8 – 9 – 10 – 11 – 15 and Van Zyl sped through for a try which Boshoff converted.

Paul Roos vs Menlopark, 32-5

Paul Roos were expected to win this one and they did but somehow the score does not do justice to Menlopark's endeavours, and in the end the difference those two Paul Roos stars – fullback Joshua Vermeulen and flyhalf Damian Willemse, both South African Schools players last year. Certainly Menlopark can hold their g heads high.

Menlopark kicked off and attacked but a great run by Dylan de Villiers down the left wing set Paul Roos on the attack and they opened the score with a Willemse penalty. 3-0 after 8 minutes.

There was a great Menlopark moment when they ran the ball from their own line to five metres from the Paul Roos line. But the Stellenbosch side came back and a great kick by Vermeulen gave them a line-out which they mauled for a try by Den-Jason Dixon. 8-0 after 19 minutes.

That was the half-time score.

Paul Roos kicked off for the second half and won a turnover on the Menlopark 22 and Lyle Hendricks forced a break going left and as he was tackled near the line he popped a pass to Willemse who fell over for his first try. 13-0 after 31 minutes.

Vermeulen's try was remarkable. He was hemmed in by many Menlopark players and had no impetus but he kept weaving and somehow scored a try. Willemse converted. 20-0 after 41 minutes.

Menlopark ran but Paul Roos ran back and got close for a second try by Willemse, also in the left corner. 25-0 after 46 minutes.

Then came Menlopark's try, the sparkling try of the match. From a  scrum, just outside the Menlopark 22 flyhalf Brian Bouwer chipped. The ball bounced right and into the arms of wing Ruben Fleischhauer who gathered it in and raced 55 metres for a try on the right. 25-5 with 10 minutes to play.

From the kick-off Paul Roos attacked. They went right and Vermeulen drifted right on a long pass and got outside of his opponent,  drew the fullback and gave David-Lee Moses an easy run in for the try. Willemse converted from far out. 32-5 with 8 minutes to play.

Noord-Kaap vs SARU XV, 34-32

The SARU XV was simply Welkom Gimnasium. Together with Noord-Kaap they produced a match of great sparkle and life, despite the eight o'clock kick-off.  There were many outstanding performers, including both goal-kickers, fullback Andrew Kota for SARU XV and Cameron Hufke for Noord-Kaap, and they were both excellent runners with ball in hand.

Kota scored first when he kicked a penalty goal. 3-0 after 4 minutes but soon Noord-Kaap took over the lead with a splendid try. They attacked on the left and then went right where two long passes gave Gladwin Nieuwenhuyzen room to rush over in the right corner. Hufke converted from touch. 7-3 to Noord-Kaap after 7 minutes.

Then it was the turn of the SARU XV. A penalty set them on the attack. From a line-out they mauled and then went wide right where an underarm offload sent Ronaldo Fortuin speeding over in the right corner. And this time it was Kota's turn to convert from touch. 10-7 to SARU XV after 19 minutes.

Noord-Kaap won a turnover and attacked with strength. There was no strength like Conrad van Aswegen's strength as he ploughed through defenders to score near the posts. 14-7 to Noord-Kaap after 24 minutes.

SARU XV went on the attack and when Noord-Kaap were penalised near their line hooker Duke Jantjies tapped and plunged over in the left corner. 15-14 to SARU XV after 29 minutes.

That was the half-time score after a breathless first half.,

Two SARU XV mauls produced a penalty and Kota lengthened the lead to 18-14 after 37 minutes.

From a scrum Nieuwenhuyzen had a strong run and Rian Kotze carried it on. Noord-Kaap were at the line and scrumhalf Marc Aitken dabbed the ball over the line. 21-18 to Noord-Kaap after 40 minutes.

TRhe next try was a piece of individual brilliance. In his own half fullback Hufke started running. With great speed he set off on a weaving run which he finished with a dive to score a try which he converted. 28-18 to Noord-Kaap after 43 minutes.

SARU XV were next to score when they attacked on the right and then on the left where strong Jan Scheepers longed over in the left corner with a defender clinging to his ankles. Kota converted from touch again. 28-25 to Noord-Kaap till Hufke kicked a penalty goal. 31-25 after 50 minutes of the 60-minute match.

A penalty to SARU XV, a line-out maul a five metre scrum on the right. Scrumhalf Richman Gora, a wing at Paul Roos last year, threw a perfect pass to JW Viljoen and he burst clean over to score a try which Kota converted. 32-31 with 4 minutes to [play.

Noord-Kaap rushed on the attack and battered at the SARU XV line till the SARU XV were penalised in front of their posts, Hufke goaled and the final whistle went.

A great start to the final day of the great tournament.
