Wynberg Trek East
Wynberg Boys' High bus their way to Port Elizabeth for their annual get-together with Grey High School.
A large contingent treks – 19 rugby teams, 15 hockey teams , chess players, squash players, tabletennis players, crosscountry runners, surfers, fishermen. golfers, tennis players, air-rifle shots and debaters. It is a wonderful outing, culminating in a rugby match between the 1st XVs, and then the long bus ride home.
The rugby match could be a thriller. Grey have exciting runners who scored brilliant tries against Paul Roos and others, Wynberg have a strong pack that makes their game more structured.
Both are ranked in the FNB Top 20 – Wynberg 13th and Grey 14th, suggesting an even contest.
This year Grey have played 11 matches, winning seven.
Wynberg have played 10, winning eight.
Grey have played five Top 20 teams, beating Kearney and Paul Roos but losing to EG Jansen and Waterkloof.
Wynberg have played three Top 20 sides, beating Maritzburg College and losing to Paarl Boys' High and Paul Roos, the latter defeats each by two points.
Selection for the Eastern Province Craven Week side suggests that the Grey =backs are outstanding. They have a fullback, a wing, a centre and a flyhalf in the team – Keanu Vers, Athi Mayinje, Jeremy Ward and Curwin Bosch. They have two forwards in the Eastern Province squad – the captain Johann van Niekerk and the hooker Robin Stevens who made a try and scored a try against Paul Roos.
Western Province are announcing their team only on Monday. They picked three trial teams to play Boland teams last Wednesday and there were only two Wynberg players in the trials -centre Jihaad Smith and eighthman Keagan Timm who is the Wynberg captain.
